Two and a half years ago, I travelled to Kanazawa to admire its beauty. Then the Noto earthquake changed the journey entirely.

What I carried home was not the memory of a disaster, but the memory of its people. I witnessed neighbours caring for one another, strangers offering comfort, and kindness extended without hesitation, even to a foreign visitor like me.

I realised then that the true beauty of a place is found not only in its landscape, but in the people who call it home.

Last week, I took a break from Tokyo and returned to Noto with my wife to volunteer at Cafe HOPE - a café for temporary housing residents. Many have already been living there for more than two years and may remain for another two or three. Over tea, fun exercises and unhurried, Google-translated conversations, I was reminded that recovery is measured not only by homes rebuilt, but by moments of human connection.

I came hoping to give back, but | left with far more than I had given.

The laughter we shared, and the quiet resilience I witnessed reminded me that generosity is rarely one sided.

Noto’s scenery is breathtaking. But for me, its greatest beauty will always be the extraordinary grace of ordinary people, and the reminder that the most beautiful places are defined not only by their landscapes, but by the kindness that lives within them.
