The Democratic Republic of the Congo is experiencing its worst Ebola outbreak ever. One person is dying every 30 minutes and 50 people are dying every day.

Frontline responders, organizations and communities are doing their utmost to stop the outbreak.

Social media activists and influencers often flatten the Congo when raising awareness about what is happening. The D.R. Congo is often presented as a victim of gen0c*d3 like Palestine or victim of exploitation by major tech companies. The presentation of the D.R. Congo is mostly void of any political analysis.

Unlike Palestine, the D.R. Congo is a state with one governing authority and that government is complicit in the challenges (conflict and exploitation) that the country faces, especially considering that it is a neo-colonial regime.

All three neo-colonial regimes (Congo, Uganda & Rwanda) serve foreign interests at the expense of their own people. And. all three are in bed with the United States and Israel.

From his speech at AIPAC in 2019 to his invitation of Israel’s President to the DRC in 2025, the DRC’s president, Felix Tshisekedi has been consistent in his support of the gen0c*d@l regime in Israel. Israeli Foreign Minister, Gideo Sa’ar captures it best when he said that his government values the DRC’s “support for Israel on the international stage.”

Although some Congolese youth activists inside the Congo have not only stood with Palestinians but also challenged their government’s support of Israel, the same cannot be said about far too many of Congo’s social media activists and influencers when it comes to challenging the Congolese government’s support of Israel.

A fundamental element about the D.R. Congo is that its challenges are both internal and external. The internal challenges lay mostly with a neo-colonial regime and political class that is not only in bed with the gen0c*d@l regime in Israel but also the foreign governments and corporations that plunder the Congo.

The political elite in the Congo are part and parcel of the exploitation of the Congo and through its diplomatic support of Israel also complicit in the suffering of the Palestinian people.

Congolese who claim to stand with Palestine are far too silent about their own government’s complicity with the genocide in Palestine. Break The Silence!

Kambale reflects; “Sitting watching a young boy playing with his friends in Mar Elias refugee camp in Beirut made me think about my childhood. Why was this child being brought up in a refugee camp? Why after nearly 80 years since the Nakba are another generation having to live as exiles? As I went around the Beddawi camp near Tripoli, I couldn’t help but think about the same questions.

I met Baba Hussein Charida, now 95, who told me about how Israeli soldiers attacked his village of Safsaf in 1948. Hearing his story reminded me of the stories that I have heard from survivors in the Congo. The killing, rape, fleeing of families and destruction of their lives. Palestine is the Congo and the Congo is Palestine.

When hearing about his dream of going back home I want him to be able to see Palestine again, I want that young boy to grow up in his country and I want everyone who has been forced to leave their homeland to be able to return.

May our struggle for liberation succeed in our lifetime!”

I’ve been thinking about the process, the magic and love that it uproots and spreads. What travels with a film when it finally reaches us: the devotion, the people and their names - every single one of them, the footage, the handwritten notes, the photographs, the boxes they were kept in, the institutions that preserved them and the people who continue carrying the work forward.

Top: @david_mark_greaves and @lianigreaves in conversation with @dildaydoc during “Harlem Talks” at @cannes.docs

Bottom: 1 of William Greaves’ archive boxes. One of my favorite classrooms, I lost track of time and space when I was in there. Imagine!? Sitting next to his granddaughter, the kind realities I couldn’t even envision! The man who I studied? Whose work I shared to my students!?

And moving between the two:
- 3 research photos from the Leigh Rollin Whipper Collection, while researching at the Photographs and Prints Division @schomburgcenter

- William Greaves’ film planning materials, and photographs I encountered while researching at the @schomburgcenter

- Among the women you see moving through these images and the film:
Louise Thompson Patterson
Gerri Majors
Regina Andrews
Ida Mae Cullen
Ruth Ellington Boatwright (not pictured here but go see her in theaters)

- excerpts from @neonrated ‘s official trailer

Today it’s 50 years later and it will one day be 100 years later. One thing about William Greaves’ work is that it’s timeless but that timelessness did not happen by accident. The rigor he applied to his practice was serious; in the way he filmed, documented, kept records, kept names and preserved the life around the work so that it could continue to be encountered.

I had the immense privilege of joining this film’s journey as an Associate Producer and the gift of meeting Louise Greaves in Anne de Mare’s living room; a room where I’ve shared so many delicious friendsgiving meals. The rooms, the rooms we spend time in.

“Someone will have to give in.”

Joseph Kabila leaves little doubt about the impasse—and leaves us guessing about who must yield.

But when he adds that “something has to happen,” the question becomes: what is he preparing, and what would it mean for the Congolese people? by @congofriends

They’re stealing from Congo 🇨🇩 and calling us poor? Make it make sense🫤.

And no, it’s not just Apple. It’s about a whole system that profits from Congo’s resources while our people pay the price.

Yes, we have phones too. But this isn’t about using technology. It’s about knowing the cost behind it and asking: Who really benefits?

Congo is not poor. Congo is being exploited. Free Congo! 🇨🇩 #congoweek #wijzijncongolezen by @congofriends
