Finally delving into the world of Elizabeth Strout with Olive Kitteridge. I can already see why she’s adored by so many!

Last month’s reading was a mixed bag. I enjoyed We Love You Bunny by Mona Awad but it wasn’t as delicious as Bunny which I read earlier this year. I am keen to read more Awad though.

My favourite read of September was actually a reread of The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, always a good one to kick off spooky season with. I’ll probably reread The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova this month, one of my favourite books and being steeped in vampire lore it’s another good one for this time of year.

I’m off into town this afternoon to run a couple of errands and am dropping some books off to the free little library near me, do you ever use them? by @connectedwithcharis

We had a wonderful 24 hour trip last week to Wetherby and York. Beautiful sunshine, beautiful bridges, beautiful gourds, stood outside York Minster, delicious fish & chips, ‘Spoons brekkie, super super old roller skates spotted in a chazza… FUN TIMES taken in Yorkshire by @connectedwithcharis

How are we past the halfway mark of September already?!

Pondering Substack… to write or not to write?

That is the question.

The difficulty is that I’m terribly inconsistent.

But I might give it a go anyway.

What do you think? 😘 by @connectedwithcharis

Life lately ~ making art and baking cake and finding chicken-in-the-woods and looking at books and feeding pigs and drinking coffee and riverside walks and peas in a pod 🫛

One of the things that bookstagram captures so beautifully is how we can all have such different experiences reading the same book.

I’m currently reading Butter by Asako Yuzuki and I have come across wildly varying reviews of this one. This is one of those “Instagram made me buy it” purchases for me, I didn’t really know what it was about but when I spotted it for £3.50 I couldn’t pass it up!

I’m not very far in yet but I have been furiously underlining and definitely have thoughts, which I shall keep to myself for now. I can definitely see why it is considered controversial. Have you read Butter?

If you zoom in you can see a wonky looking me and @isham.carl!

Love this street, it’s got to be one of the most photographed streets in Oxford.

Side note: I’m currently reading The Knight and The Moth and I swear you could make a drinking game out of the amount of times Rachel Gillig has written ‘ignoble’. I really enjoyed the Shepherd King duology but the actual writing in this one feels lazy, I would have thought that this was written first. I’m sure I join thousands of others pondering how it is finally September today after what feels like the longest summer ever…

I’m back at work tomorrow after two lovely weeks off, but this time last week I was in the delightful Moreton-in-Marsh where I found this beautiful illustrated 1970 copy of Laurie Lee’s Cider with Rosie. Isn’t it gorgeous?

I read this many moons ago at school, the year before my GCSEs I think so I barely remember a thing about it. Another one for the reread pile!

My current reread is The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, which according to my Stories, none of you have read?! It’s a wonderful, eccentric YA fantasy that is the perfect read for spooky season, such a fun read.

Do you reread books?

Little moments…

Finally got my mitts on madonna in a fur coat (with a free coffee, thank you very much @gulpfictionbooks )

Visited @barkerandcompany_oxford such a lovely spot, they’ve got some gorgeous prints and quite an array of secondhand books 📚

Eaten a lot of yummy food lately 😋

Wanders… big skies, dinosaurs, Harrods doormen egg cups…

And more book shops of course.

It’s all the little moments that make up a life 🤍 taken in Oxford, Oxfordshire by @connectedwithcharis

I’ve had some great reads this month! Being on holiday for two weeks meant plenty of extra reading time 📖

My favourite reads this month were fun reads, Book Lovers by Emily Henry and The Lunatics by Navessa Allen - one romance and one romantasy, not my usual genres!

Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid, The Memory Police by Yoko Ogawa and The First Time Lauren Pailing died by Alyson Rudd were all amazing and very different reads (mini reviews in the photos, swipe to see them.)

I also started On The Road by Jack Kerouac which I think will take me a while, it’s not a book that’s in a hurry to get anywhere if you know what I mean? 🤷‍♀️

What was your favourite read this month?

I used to spend hours styling books for photos for bookstagram back in 2018/2019, I enjoyed it so much that styling books was pretty much a hobby of its own.

Like most of my hobbies it has fallen to the wayside as I moved on to something else, but the one thing that has always remained a hobby is reading itself. If I’m not reading, something is drastically wrong, ha ha!

This beautiful mess unfortunately wasn’t set up (and definitely needs a tidy!) but does show my current read, The Memory Police. It had been on my shelf a while but I realised now is the time when I saw that August is women in translation month. I’m so glad I picked this one up when I spotted it in the charity shop.

Imagine every day things just disappearing. Ribbon. One day you wake up and have no concept of ribbon, how it would be used, why you have them. You incinerate them. Emeralds. The green glassy looking things? Were they once valuable? Who knows?

But some people do know. They remember. And they too disappear.

I’m about halfway through and am really enjoying it, it’s such a thought provoking book. Have you read it?
