Took a really fun little trip up to Newfound Lake, where I went when I was little, with my parents and Jay. It was great, except I have hEDS and this bed SUCKS. Oh my goodness.

Two nights on it and I already know it’s going to wreck me for at least the next week. (Dr. Desiree, Dr. Alli, Dr. Amy: HELP.)

Most people with hEDS don’t have a care team. They have a collection of specialists—hours apart, none of whom have ever spoken to each other—and one exhausted patient carrying the information between all of them and hoping nothing gets lost in translation.

(42 years of being my own medical project manager. I do not recommend it.)

That’s exactly why we built Connective Wellness the way we did. Every specialist you’d ever need for an hEDS body—NPs, PTs, patient advocate, health coach, somatic therapist, nutrition coach—under one roof, all talking to each other, all working from the same picture of your body at the same time. Not a referral network.

hEDS is going to ask a lot of you. It already has.

Carrying this diagnosis, dealing with a system that still doesn’t fully understand this body—that’s not evidence you’re broken. It’s evidence you’ve been doing something genuinely hard, for a long time, mostly without help.

(Managing a body nobody trained your doctors to recognize is its own full-time job. Nobody hands you a manual for that one.)

None of us knew what we were looking at.

And the system didn’t help. hEDS isn’t something most providers are trained to recognize, so you get sent home with a different diagnosis, or no diagnosis at all, and told to manage something you don’t understand.

(Nineteen specialists. Thirty-eight years. A lot of “your labs are normal” standing in for an actual answer.)

I spent 38 years in this body before I had a name for what was happening in it. And somewhere in the middle of all of that—the appointments, the parking lot cries, the symptom lists I edited down because I’d learned that too many made them look at me differently—I stopped being a patient and started being a builder.

The thing I needed didn’t exist. So I built it.

Connective Wellness is what happens when someone who has been the patient builds the clinic. Every decision we’ve made—who we hired, how we structured care, what we built first—came from someone who has been on the other side of that appointment.

One of the most confusing parts of hEDS is how disconnected everything seems at first.

For years I managed things separately. Joint pain over here. Fatigue over there. A racing heart I filed under anxiety because nobody told me POTS existed. It wasn’t until I started seeing the pattern myself—not a doctor, me—that any of it started making sense.

(Dislocating a shoulder and getting lightheaded in the shower are not two separate problems. Nobody told me that for thirty-eight years.)

A lot of patients arrive thinking their body is just unpredictable, when really it’s one system—connective tissue, nervous system, mast cells—all pulling on each other at once. Seeing that doesn’t fix anything by itself. But it’s the difference between “what is wrong with me” and “okay, now I know what I’m actually dealing with.”
