“Lake” Official Music Video

If you Youtube search “Lake Havasu” you get a bunch of videos about the 4th of July and how crazy the lake can be. Granted, that’s true...but it’s not what sticks out in my memory.

So @layne.d.c , my parents, and I grabbed our cameras and spent a day on Lake Havasu trying to capture what makes it special: focusing on play, snacks, and the texture and color of the water.

The water is blue and green and white in the day, turns orange as you watch the sunset, and finally pink/purple if you look toward the mountains. The colors glow on the skin of your favorite people, creating halos and silhouettes.

“Lake” holds a pretty dark scene in its’ lyrics and harmony, but capturing the beauty of the lake adds a new dimension - one that I intended from the start - of how juxtaposing darkness and beauty turn you toward reverence, history, and colors of emotion that are easier shown than explained.

Being “an artist” means a combination of a lot of different skills. It’s important to know which ones you’re contributing to and why. No one can guide you on how to build your character. That’s all you.

Naysayers and gowiththeflow-ers will tell you to follow your bliss and work on whatever you want for as long as you live. I’m not saying that’s wrong, just that you might turn out unintentionally lopsided. Nothing wrong with that…asymmetry is cute in its own way.

There’s gonna be people who say “hey man you should get better at music so that you can play more of these better playing gigs” to which I say FOR SURE I want to do that, but let’s be real that’s gonna take time…in the meanwhile I still need to pay for my rent and practice other skills other than vocal harmonies / guitar solos for songs I’ll perform 5 times total.

I feel like so much of my pain comes from comparing the “me I wanted to be” and the “me that I am”, so I’m trying (often failing *flailing*) to normalize the reality - lots of artists have made compromises to keep making their art. It’s an honor to join the ranks.

Lesson 2 of whatever this is…we all need ways to cope with disappointment. If you don’t pick one intentionally, one will be assigned to you and you might not like what it is (I didn’t).

Letting go of coping mechanisms can feel good for some people but I don’t know most of those people.

For anyone thinking of becoming a full time artist, I think a therapist is a good idea. Betterhelp is like $65 a week and yeah it’s a crapshoot but sometimes you shoot and you don’t hit crap and it’s a decent solution to a (probably) very solvable problem.

Regardless, feeling your own pain feels like SHITE and kudos to all you brave people out there who have been doing this your whole life holy shit you should get a medal.

I spent a lot of time 2016-2026 wanting to “be better than I was”…a condition my therapist labels a rejection of reality. Adverse reactions to reality can create a lot of internal conflict…and that breeds stress.

As a super buff trim alpha athlete, I’m not afraid of stress in the least. I’ve used it as fuel for a very long time; however, it seems to be the case that my body has grown tired from of fuel and requires more sustainable sources of energy.

This is the classic lesson that “the skills that got you here can’t lead you to the next place”.

This series runs the risk of being overly sincere…and to that I say (like the improv comic) YES! AND there’s more on the way so plug your nose cause here we go.

This is the last song on my latest album. I think it’s soft as hell, and I’m somehow getting even softer and digging it more these days. People seem to enjoy it...and there begins my journey to become somehow even more of a soft-hearted weenie. Alas, weenie I must become. Weenie is my destiny and my truth.

Been following the muse a lot lately. I used to hate people who said stuff like that. All my phrases these days are really trite and pre-written...but my inner life is surprisingly rich. Makes it really hard to want to describe it to the rest of the world. I’m “doing things for their own sake” more often. Nobody/everybody wants to hear that sort of thing. Here’s me playing The Book Of Love at Golddiggers bar recently.

Almost 8 years ago I wrote this song about what it would be like to use love potion to coerce someone to marry you….and you might be asking yourself “why, oh why, would this be an interesting subject for you to write about?”

Two main reasons: I just got married, and I write a LOT, so it gives me permission to write on the fringes of my mind.

I had never been married, I was 24, and this song was part of my “darkest-timeline” narrative where I end up with someone who desperately wants out, but I’m working hard in the opposite direction.

I’m grateful that my marriage has turned out nothing like this, and I can’t help but be grateful to the darkest-timeline as a reminder of what not to be aiming toward.
