We had to say goodbye to our home, but the walls didn’t make that room @theindependentcc , the people who built, produced, performed and attended the club made it so, and you can’t terminate a lease on community. No chain club can ever replicate what we created. DIY is dying and we have to do more to support the dreamers with passion projects.

The Independent was a home for silly misfit. It was made by comedians for comedians and everyone in the room knew it was a kill-box perfect for standup, aside from the temperature and smell sometimes. It was a safe place to bomb and experiment. When you got a laugh in there, even if it was just 5 people (which was a lot of the time) it would feel amazing, and crushing when the room was full felt spiritual, the Indie was a church for funny. It was where we all grew as comedians, producers and friends. I wouldn’t be even half the comedian I am today if I didn’t get most of my reps in on that stage.

I’m so lucky that @bartdangus saw my potential when I didn’t and let me join his team even though I had no idea what I was doing. None of us really did, but that’s what made it so exciting. We made something special out of nothing. We came together and literally built the club with our hands. We cold emailed headliners. We promoted the hell out of it and when we finally packed that space out was the first time I felt proud of myself, but I was mostly proud of my friends. We didn’t do it for money, we did it for the love of the game.

Moving to New York was extremely hard for me, I would never of had the confidence to leave if I didn’t have the Indie crew rooting for me. I’m so thankful for Detroit Comedy, for Planet Ant, and everyone who kept the Indie going for 8 years. I love y’all and I am excited for the next chapter. We did that shit.
