"The contemplation of the future invoked in the 'Ophthalmos' image of the child regarding the dark heavens under the maternal, almost ecological gaze of the woman, has all the blue peace and quiet of a Yeatsian Madonna and Child on the dim, dechristianising stage of the old Abbey."

"But the work has been done. In the dark. We know only too well what this child, this woman, what the artist himself, are regarding."
- Martin Walton

'Telescopic Vision' (75 × 125cm, 1998) telescopes space so the figures assembled round a telescope (perhaps on a hill or on a shrunken globe) view a sky that compresses day and night and a moon that seems almost within physical reach. A cleaner, more formal and linear composition than its companion 'Then We Upon Our Globe's Last Verge Shall Go', utilising the Golden Section (which I usually stay away from), and possibly more resolved but less successful, it was part of my first solo show in 1999. I'd love to know where it is now.

The figures are myself, Professor Vincent McCabe (who died in 2017), my brother Niall, nephew Eoin Mardirosian and good friend Emer Rockett.

I was delighted to give a talk @courthousegalleryclare this week to students from @ennistymoncommunityschool and show them around my ROGUE'S GALLERY exhibition. Amazing feedback from the students: seeing them connect with and appreciate the work makes all the hours spent making it in the studio worthwhile. Thanks to teachers Mary Fahy and Grace O'Hara for organising this. The exhibition ends today: thank you @courthousegalleryclare and its staff and all the kind people of Ennistymon for hosting my art and welcoming me to their lovely town!

Here's a really old piece, originally commissioned for the UCD Engineering Building in 1994, the first of a whole series of paintings on astronomical themes. The inspiration is the Newtonian illustration in the book held by the teacher-figure (my old friend and one-time thesis tutor, Paul O'Brien) demonstrating gravity through the paths of projectiles fired at different velocities from a canon on a miniature globe. I used a fish-eye perspective and warped, circular horizon to try to create a sense of a crowd standing on an impossibly small globe, so small that day and night exist simultaneously for them and the moon and stars seem almost in reach. The earth's curvature and the angle of the figures at right is intended to create a sense of vertigo and falling, an intimation of loss and mortality. I was never really happy with the piece because I felt I didn't fully reconcile all the elements and achieve a satisfying unity, but still it's complex, ambitious and the source of many later pictures, some still to come.

The title 'Then We Upon Our Globe's Last Verge Shall Go' is from Dryden's 'Annus Mirabilis' of 1666:

"Then, we upon our Globe’s last verge shall go,
And view the Ocean leaning on the Sky:
From thence our rolling Neighbours we shall know,
And on the Lunar world securely pry."

Models in this picture include Professor Vincent McCabe (who commissioned the UCD picture) friends Brendan Donlon, Fiona Delaney, Louise Campbell, Tony Fitzmaurice and his son Fionn, my father (with binoculars), my uncle Maurice Brennan, brother Niall, nephew Eamon, neices Fiona and Isabelle and myself.
