13 years ago today, Aperture Lane started.
Since then, there’ve been countless timelines, more edits than I can count, and a lot of vendor meals inhaled between speeches.

To every couple who trusted us with your day; to every fellow wedding pro who’s made room for us; and to my team, who make the long days feel short:
Thank you.

Here’s to 13 more.

Every great set of ideas and every Pinterest board eventually meets the real world. And it’s okay if you don’t know what to do when that point comes.

The beauty of working with a photographer that knows their stuff is that they will be able to plan these things out for you. And when the time comes where challenges arise, they’ll be able to improvise and still lead you through a great experience…

… which also means great photos for you 😊 taken in Mississauga, Ontario by @conqueringryan

I’m grateful for my wife, my loved ones, my kids, and everything that I’ve experienced because of my marriage.

But, my wedding photos are in a cloud folder somewhere, and I haven’t looked at them in so long.

Yes, I have the bias of being a wedding photographer. But I also have the first-hand experience of being someone who went cheap and didn’t consider the long-term value of the memories from this special day.

Don’t go cheap on your wedding photo and video. Memories fade. Aside from your spouse, they are the only things you walk away with and have to share that are not lessened with time. taken in North York by @conqueringryan

Listen, I’m all for capturing the candid moments and smiles and laughs that make that feel-good experience. But some couples want to slide to the other end of the range.

And for M & J, intimate, sexy and fierce was the vibe. The formula was drama: the lighting, the looks, the poses, and their custom DJ set playing in the background šŸŽµšŸ”„šŸ”„

Your engagement is a one-time experience and the best way to celebrate is to actually lean into the experience that you want to create.

We use our Date Night system with all our Aperture Lane couples to figure out what their vibe is and build a theme that feels like them.

If you’re down for an experience like this, reach out.

ā€œWe’ll just get the guests to film it.ā€

I don’t smile and nod. I’m not gonna pretend that’s a plan when I know exactly what that footage looks like.

So I tell them the truth, and then I let them decide. Because it’s their wedding and their money.

Here’s what I tell them. The guest footage collection is always the same:
* Fourteen vertical clips, none longer than nine seconds
* Your cousin’s thumb, beautifully lit
* Someone’s aunt talking over your vows about the parking situation
* A shaky pan away from the kiss to capture, for reasons nobody can explain, the ceiling
* Zero usable audio, because the phone was 40 feet back behind a wall of other phones

And then I tell them the part that actually matters. Your guests are not filming your wedding. Your guests are AT your wedding. That’s the job you gave them when you sent the invite. That’s the job you WANT them to do.

Somebody has to be the one not living it, so everyone else can. That’s us. We signed up for that.

Sometimes couples hear all that and book video. Sometimes they don’t. Both are fine.

But I said the thing out loud, so now I’m the villain; I’ve made my peace with it. 😌

As we narrate together!

You haven’t spent your life being professionally photographed. Why would anyone expect you to know what to do with your hands?

ā€œJust be naturalā€ is lazy direction dressed up as a creative choice. It puts the entire job back on you.

Our job is to give you just enough guidance to feel safe — and then disappear so the real moments can happen.

Authenticity in front of a camera isn’t a personality trait. It’s a craft. Ours. taken in Toronto, Ontario by @conqueringryan

One of the best ways God draws us to Himself is through community. Our new brother, Isaiah, is such a cool example of this.

Though he was interested in Godly things, it was Isaiah’s childhood friend (who had recently gotten baptized himself) that invited him out to church at the right moment.

From then, the guys in the small group rallied around Isaiah to guide him to Jesus through the scriptures.

Welcome to the kingdom, brother. And, congrats to the Young Wings family group for this victory!

One very common challenge as Christians is to pray for and believe that our family members will want to join us in the kingdom.

Some wait weeks. Some have been waiting for years. Regardless of the outcome, we know God is in control. As Christians living with our unsaved loved ones, all we can do is humbly walk with The Lord, respectfully share our lives and pray.

For our sister, Soverna, she was able to witness her husband get baptized this month. She shares the wisdom of waiting for Godā€˜s timing and his plan (that we may not alway understand).

We’re so happy for them to be now united in Christ! Welcome to the kingdom, brother Jordan!

ā€œThe Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.ā€

A lot of couples that I meet tend to say something like, ā€œOh, we’re not photogenicā€œ

And I just look at them and say, ā€œIt’s okay to feel that wayā€¦ā€

My response is, ā€œDid you know that you’re working with an expert?ā€

ā€œDid you know that we’re not JUST going to point the camera at you and push a button?ā€

ā€œDid you know that you’re working with the photographer who’s going to figure out your vibe as a couple and direct you accordingly?ā€

On top of all that, my team and I don’t believe that you need to choose between candidly, fun OR romantically elegant.

Why not both?

It does have to be one or the other; It’s more like ā€œHow much of each?ā€

And when you work with a photographer that brings out the best in you, those concerns about being ā€œphotogenicā€ will turn into:
ā€œDang! We look so good! Our wedding photos are gonna to be amazing!ā€ taken in Toronto, Canada by @conqueringryan
