Walking among Caspar David Friedrich @ Alte Nationalgalerie, Berlin, Germany, 2026

I donโ€™t know where to begin. Caspar David Friedrich is perhaps the most important visual artist in my life, with works like โ€œThe Abbey in The Oakwoodโ€œ and โ€œThe Monk By The Seaโ€ serving as deep, introspective reminders of the weight of solitude and the finality of death, and the blending of sky, earth, and sea into one, fluid ether. The feelings that his work stirs in me are ones of deep reflection upon the invisible loneliness I carry all through my life. I find his art incredibly important to me personally, and a definitive part of who I am as a human, as an artist, as a storyteller.

Last week, Michael and I stayed in Berlin and had the opportunity to visit Friedrichโ€™s paintings, and it was utterly life changing. The room was quiet among the rest of gallery rooms, as if silence drew an inhale in the presence of the stories sprawled across ivory walls, and I spent a majority of my time in there sobbing as quietly as I couldโ€”the guard was giving me weird looksโ€”and just being in the presence of such powerful art.

Enjoy these photos of the experience that donโ€™t compare to the physical feeling of being in that room nearly enough. Youโ€™ll just have to take my word for it. And that last pic of my live crying when I first saw The Abbey. taken in Alte Nationalgalerie by @conr.d

27 ๐ŸŽ‚, 2026
-
all my life, iโ€™ve felt change come as an anomaly, as an intruder, as a stake driven through the heart or silver bullet to the muzzle. but strangely, turning 27 today, iโ€™m filled with a sense of peace and eagerness for what lies ahead. now that ive earned a graduate certificate in college and university teaching in addition to my creative writing mfa, im more excited than ever to dive into my future, wherever that may take meโ€”upstate new york, a lighthouse by lake superior in minnesota, abroad to germany, or some other newer landscape. either way. i will see you there between the shafts of light and the rumblings of passing cars.

in a way, a birthday almost feels like a goodbye. this one in particular more than the others. maybe because iโ€™m writing this thousands of miles away from where i usually am, now in the arms of the man i love, or maybe because im finally beginning to push through the veil that was young adulthood. either way, a chapter is ending, and another is about to begin.

and so to you dear reader, i ask that you do what i plan to do this next year, and be gentle to yourself. hold yourself accountable, but be gentle. you are your own sunrise, and you must radiate and shine across every landscape you find yourself upon. it is fate, yours and mine.

to the memories of the year before, the memories of now, and the memories to come.

yours,
will

The Dog Headed Saint: St. Christopher & The Black Image In Christianity, 2022

Happy Black History Month! New Substack Article up now! This was a piece I wrote back in 2022 that earned me an Art History Research Award at PSU and I realized I had never published it publicly. It considers the racist medieval art of St. Christopher, who may have in fact been a Black man grossly misinterpreted as an animal. I briefly reflected on it and why I wrote it as well. I wrote a poem and an article thinking about the famous photo of the last Atlas lion in the wild on Substack. Ancestral animal memory, ghostly landscapes, and yes I managed to sneak Toni Morrison into it. Itโ€™s up on my Substack now, the link is in my bio ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿฆ by @conr.d
