“It is an unsettling feeling, to dehorn a rhino.

Dehorning an entire population within a reserve has proven highly effective in deterring future poaching incidents - it is one of the last available options to save this species from being poached to extinction. If left as is, it is only a matter of time until each and every rhino will be illegally poached, it’s horn roughly hacked off and cruelly left to die from its injuries, potentially leaving an orphaned calf behind.

We know all this, yet still, it feels like you are taking away something that isn’t yours to take. Removing something that belongs to them and them alone, in order to protect them from what will most certainly cause their death.

It is impossible to describe the feeling of standing next to these impressive animals, fast asleep and unaware of the buzzing activity around them. To monitor the breathing of a little calf, while its mom’s horn is being safely removed by skilled vets who know exactly how much to take off so that she’ll never be in pain because of it.

To anxiously wait while the sedative reversal takes effect, hoping that the animals will wake up quickly and without any side effects. When the little calf takes a while longer to get back on its feet, you can feel everyone holding their breath and hear them muttering encouraging words, nudging the little guy to get up - because if he doesn’t, we will have failed at what we set out to do.

The Guardbook Conservation Foundation works towards forest conservation and supports the forest guards of India in their conservation duties. In 2020, the CWC raised over US $4,000 for the installation of a solar powered water pump on the periphery of Ranthambore National Park. This would prevent local people from taking their livestock into the park during the hot summer months, thereby reducing man-animal conflict!

The Madhya Pradesh Tiger Foundation Society is a non-profit organization that focuses on the conservation of wildlife and their habitats with a special emphasis on the tiger. In 2020, as part of their Covid-19 Relief Campaign, the CWC raised over US $3,000 for the distribution of ration packets and medicine to the frontline staff of the forest department across reserves in Madhya Pradesh.
