The Giving Tree

Today marks five years since your passing, Momma. This year has brought so many wonderful people, moments, and experiences into my life, and I often found myself aching a little with the need to share them with you. There has been so much color in my life, and I attribute part of that to you and the way you taught me to see, look out for, and appreciate color. The love you gave me is reflected in many ways through the people I’m fortunate enough to be surrounded by—my ecosystem, my coral reef. So, in some ways, there are days when I feel your presence most when your absence is loudest. Today, I look back with gratitude and a warm heart, finally accepting that I carry you with me as I celebrate the life you lived and the love you gave, time and time again, to everyone around you. 💕

Love you, Momma 💐

Congratulations to my BTS-loving, foodie-partner, & dropping-all-the-facts girly, Carmen! 😭💗

Carmen,
To say I am proud of you would be an understatement. I am filled with warmth and joy knowing the person you are and are becoming is someone that is kind, generous, strong and resilient. You are so grounded in your foundation and beliefs. So much so that when high school challenged you, you didn’t waver and handled it with so much grace. For this reason and many others, I am confident that no matter the route you choose to embark on through undergrad, you will excel. 🥹

Thank you for making these years some of the most special with the privilege of getting to be a part of your journey. Watching you grow up from the days you would play on the swing outside the house, to the days you would walk me through your art work at school, or simply seeing you dance to BTS music videos for hours, has been so special. My memory box is filled with some of the sweetest memories because of you. I look forward to seeing you conquer your next chapter at CSUSM! So proud of you, my nugget!

Flower: Passiflora.
Location taken: Mom’s garden 🪴
“The passion fruit flower blooms the way certain people love: boldly, vulnerably, and without apology.”

Been seeing a lot of passion fruit flowers recently- Mom’s favorite flower and one she grew in every home we lived in. Seeing them in places I visit feels like a warm and gentle reminder of her- blooming boldly despite life challenges. Couldn’t help but draw parallels to life lately. It’s been sweet, weaved with many new experiences, and so rich. But above all else so freeing 🥹 Something I like to think she would be proud to see and something I hope to continue taking on after her. Commemorated Mother’s Day by doing the scary things and living vulnerably. 💗

✨2025✨

An end of an era. 2025, you were so good for many reasons. Immensely grateful for the growth and all that it accompanied. Especially grateful for the people that made accomplishing my dream so sweet. 🥹 Here’s a little recap of such a blissful moment shared with some incredible people & so beautifully captured by Jacquelyn. 💕😭 The theme was garden. I wanted it to feel the way I felt walking in my Mom’s garden to help me feel like I was celebrating a milestone with an essence of her. 💐 In a really special way, everyone (and some mising) provided me that beautiful bliss with their love and support. Truly will cherish this moment forever.🌷

May 2026 be filled with gratitude and warmth 💕🫶🏽

33.

Entered and finished my birthday month feeling so much gratitude. Throughout this last year I’ve seen so much growth in becoming the person that I am today. From earning a PhD to exploring music, nourishing my roots in dance, and finding new hobbies like Dj-ing. For that I thank the people (only a few captured) that feed my soul with their wholesome light. ✨

Cannot wait to see what this coming year has in store as I embark on a new era. 🥹💕🫶🏽 by @consweeswee

Doctoral Defense Highlights Part II.

My coral reef. 🪸🐠
I’m amazed at how life works. When reflecting on my PhD I realized that my research work could be thought of in the context of the oceanic ecosystems that keep our earth 🌎 thriving. Coral reefs- colorful, rich and diverse. Much like the community of individuals that nourish my life.
To the community of individuals that helped me overcome obstacles, make success sweeter, and sprinkled my time in grad school and life with much needed sparkle, thank you. While not all are pictured here, their support throughout this time does not go undervalued. While many times I had to prioritize my time in lab, your texts, calls, and moments shared whether it was over food, coffee, or a night of dancing, fueled me and kept me afloat. In more ways than I can describe. From the depths of my heart, thank you for making my coral reef rich, colorful, diverse, and collaborative. A healthy community and environment, I believe, are the foundation of success. So thank you for contributing to my success, I share it with you. 🥹💕🪸🐠 by @consweeswee

Doctoral Defense Highlights Part 1

It’s been over a month since I defended my thesis & I am still processing it all. However, then & now can both be summed into one word- gratitude. To say that grad school was challenging would be an understatement. It’s all consuming, requiring conditioning even before getting into grad school. It requires mental stamina, self discipline, & sacrifices. I can only imagine it being to what climbing Mount Everest might feel like. Some parts you walk alone as the air around gets heavier and you begin to question it all, meanwhile the promise of a beautiful view and self satisfaction of accomplishment being the constant reminder that it is worth it. Along the way there are resources that help you overcome the physical and environmental challenges- the equivalent to mentors/support groups/collaborators/friends. The constant self affirmations sitting on the foundation built by the people that have helped shape you and support you throughout the years being your daily doses of serotonin. While transforming from a consumer of knowledge to a creator of knowledge was no easy feat, along this whole journey there have been a plethora of individuals that helped whether by providing uplifting words, resources and tools to complete experiments, connecting to people that could help, building pipelines for individuals like myself to have equal access and additional support overcoming the barriers in science, or simply by showing up when times were toughest in the form of a text, an email, or a catchup meal. Those moments mattered so much. They carried and nourished me so that moments of accomplishment and success were possible. Because this foundation was so strong I learned to embrace failure as redirection. I learned to pivot quicker when something was not working. Collectively, these milestone character developments transcended into how I take on life. I’ve had the courage to try new things, experiment and push myself outside my comfort bubble, and grow both scientifically and personally. For this and more, I am so grateful to the community that helped me accomplish this goal- my coral reef. 🪸💞 by @consweeswee

Kind of a surreal moment as I begin my last Spring quarter as a graduate student. I took some time to take it all in as I stared at my lab bench. I thought of all the versions of me that greeted it throughout these last 5 years.

There were many times I felt dread, harbored sadness, processed losses, and wondered if I would get to defend my PhD. In the same token, I experienced success, felt happiness, found my voice and along with it my purpose once again, and grew excitement over where the science was taking me. All along the way, the village of people that have enriched this experience has grown and flourished. For this I am most grateful. I can firmly say that I am so happy to finally be at the final stages of my PhD training & can’t believe how much I have grown both as a scientist but as a person as well. 2014 Consuelo wouldn’t believe if I told her how this experience would unfold. I’d like to think I did right by her. Looking forward to this last quarter as a graduate student with gratitude. I can wait for what these next couple of months will bring. 💕🥹 by @consweeswee
