It’s not always the easiest thing when a director tells a special make-up FX artist that he wants all the deaths in his movie to be realistic, i.e., the opposite of crazy over-the-top gore. Luckily Deryk Wehrley was not put off by this less-than-showy approach. I remember one night on Watchdog - A Horror Film, I asked him for a single drop of blood. He said, ā€œOne drop?ā€ I said, ā€œOne drop.ā€ That sums up our relationship perfectly.

Speaking of don’t-show-off requests, I put the same challenge to composer Frank Dormani. Now I know, people looove big themes and wild musical gymnastics, but there’s room for the opposite as well. What I wanted—and what I generally like—is a more atmospheric approach. I’ve always admired filmmakers who know when to strike, rather than those who are striking the audience on constant repeat.

Praise be to these two talents, who fulfilled my requests and then some!

Without Jaren Lewis, this flick would not have been possible. As a cinematographer and editor, he is by far the most collaborative, hardworking, and receptive contributor I’ve worked with on the production side of things. Always knowledgeable about technical issues, he has assisted with bringing Watchdog to life in more ways than one.

That said, I must give a huuuge shoutout to Jake Kopronica, who was our First AD (and talent). I appreciate how he dealt with all my obsessive prep, scheduling, storyboarding, etc. But a million miles of prep means nothing without someone there to keep it all on track and running smoothly. Jake tackled the task handily, making sure all were happy.

Felissa Rose and I have worked together multiple times. That said, I’ve never been so thrilled as with the performance she gave in Watchdog. It’s always a pleasure having her kind spirit around the set, though I think most of you who have met her know this. She’s invited to be in anything I direct, always playing something new and fresh.

I have to admit I have been a fan of Mark Patton since ā€œCome Back To The Five & Dime, Jimmy Dean Jimmy Dean.ā€ Of course I never thought I’d work with him on a film. Then came Robert, a role I could easily imagine him nailing from the moment he was suggested. I’m glad he agreed to jump aboard, and man, he did not disappoint.

I met Celeste Blandon on the same set as Wes, and like Wes, I instantly knew she was right for
the character she ended up playing in Watchdog - A Horror Film. Still, I was stunned by the amount of emotion and dedication she put into her performance. It was astounding to watch her work and alarming
to see her go the places she went to pull off the part.

Like so many others involved with the film, I’d work with her again in a second. It is also worth
noting that Celeste handled the makeup and hair for the flick as well. There was a great spirit of
collaboration on the set, with so many of us pulling double or even triple duty to bring Watchdog
to life. I’m eternally grateful for Celeste’s work and the work of so many others.

Even though we were both friends with Adam Wingard, I didn’t meet Wes Robinson until I acted in Phantom Fun-World. At that point, I had already written Watchdog and was considering who I might cast as Drew, the antagonist of the film. A war veteran, Drew’s a real piece of work and yet still very human. I was blown away by how similarly Wes and I saw the character and how easily Drew seemed to leap out of my imagination and onto the screen.

Of course that only acknowledges how great Wes is as an actor. His contributions don’t end there because all the graphics you’ve seen throughout the Watchdog production and beyond, yep, all of that was Wes, including the one above. Multitalented. Big-hearted. A genuinely honorable fellow. How could someone like that be so good at being bad? Work and dedication, I say.
