Today we celebrate one of Africa’s most extraordinary and endangered predators — the African wild dog (Lycaon pictus), also known as the painted dog or painted wolf.
Fewer than 7,000 remain in the wild. These highly social, intelligent hunters once ranged widely across sub-Saharan Africa. Today they face intense pressure from habitat loss and fragmentation, disease, human conflict, and snares.
At Contemplate Wild, this species is where our story began. In mid-2016, an entire pack in our area was lost to canine distemper. That tragedy sparked a vaccination response and the deployment of tracking collars — the practical starting point for the real-time monitoring platforms we build today.
Those early collars helped protect remaining packs, improved follow-up care, and flagged high-risk movements. From that foundation we have grown into broader conservation technology: IoT networks, animal tracking, ranger safety systems, data pipelines, and actionable intelligence for the people protecting these landscapes — across Greater Kruger and beyond.
African wild dogs remind us why monitoring matters. Their packs are tight-knit, their hunting success is exceptional, and every individual counts. When we can detect threats early — disease risk, snares, boundary crossings — we give managers and rangers the chance to act.
On this World Wild Dog Day (and every day), we honour the painted dogs still running free and the dedicated people working to keep them that way.
Monitor. Analyse. Conserve.

Today we celebrate the people who quietly do extraordinary things.

Every day, rangers walk, drive and patrol to protect our wildlife—often in difficult and dangerous conditions.

Their dedication is measured in courage, kilometres, and unwavering commitment.

At Contemplate Wild, it’s a privilege to support those who watch over our natural heritage.
Together we’ve monitored 243,283 patrols, tracked over 3.57 million kilometres (89 times around the Earth), and recorded more than 5 million real-time GPS locations to keep rangers connected when it matters most.

To every ranger: thank you. Today, and every day.

Great news!

The two lions that were captured over the past few weeks have now been successfully released back into the wild. Both lions were fitted with tracking collars before their release, allowing the team to continue monitoring their movements and ensuring their wellbeing.

A huge thank you to @wildlifevets.com_sa Wildlifevets and @africanwildlifevets @saphirebluedrone for their incredible support, professionalism, and dedication throughout this operation. Your expertise and commitment to conservation make moments like this possible.

And also a big thank you to @contemplatewild for the generous donation of the tracking collars. Your support plays a vital role in helping us protect and monitor these magnificent animals.

Welcome back to the wild🍀

A big milestone for conservation. We successfully collared a wild dog pack that has never been collared before. Huge thank you to @contemplatewild and our donors without which none of this would have been possible! Here’s to keeping this pack safer and contributing valuable data for their future.

Every @sanparksknp ranger in Kruger — all 460+ of them — now carries a GPS panic button that works anywhere across 2 million hectares.

With @contemplatewild’s ranger safety platform — powered by our expanded @sigfox_southafrica network and integrated with @earthrangertech — an emergency alert reaches supervisors and the nearest responder in seconds.

This system has already helped enable two helicopter evacuations by SANParks’ teams.

Built hand-in-hand with the rangers and SANParks, the platform also supports daily operations with live tracking, patrol playback, and smarter planning tools.

Because when rangers come home safe, conservation wins.

Contemplate Wild, partnering with @sanparksknp, is thrilled about the completion of a massive Sigfox 0G network expansion across the Greater Kruger area!

This low-power, wide area network now delivers over 97% effective coverage across this incredible 2.3-million-hectare landscape—including Kruger National Park and adjacent reserves. Its technology dedicated entirely to wildlife protection.

Since 2022, we’ve monitored 460+ rangers and 1400+ animals from 22 different species that call this area home—from rhinos and lions to rare antelope and the endangered African wild dog.

𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹-𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁:
This connectivity means faster, more decisive action on the ground:
🚨 Ranger Safety: Real-time distress signals from rangers have already allowed for swift medical evacuations by SANParks in two life-threatening situations. Their safety is our priority.
🐾 Protecting Wild Dogs: It enables rapid location and response to snared wild dog packs, offering a second chance to one of Africa's most threatened carnivores.
📈 Data-Driven Protection: Encrypted data flows instantly to our platforms, triggering near-real-time alerts for conservation teams to act quickly.

Rolled out by Contemplate Wild and @sanparksknp —this is a true collaboration between conservation and innovation.
