Magnificent 1960’s Omega Seamaster DeVille ref. 166.020sc in full 18K gold. Rolex Oyster Perpetual ref. 114300. Full set.

One of the more inconspicuous releases from Rolex in recent years were the white and black dial OPs from 2018. Like most models outside the professional line, these OPs lived a quiet existence for years and was readily available at ADs.

During the peak of the 2021-22 hype cycle, the watch was suddenly selling at 2x retail price on the secondary market - a multiplier usually reserved for select Daytonas and GMTs. Part of the attraction was most likely speculation fueled by the swift discontinuation of the white dial, and although 11.000 euro seemed completely disproportionate, I believe that the allure and lasting qualities of this simple watch acted as a palate cleanser that helped reset expectations for the OP line and open up completely new avenues.

Rolex has produced some incredible white dials over the years, and the tone and quality of this particular one makes the watch feel intentional and like a coherent Rolex product. The dial has a slight metallic sheen, which effortlessly absorbs surrounding colours, making it an ever-changing wearing experience. This 39mm watch has enough qualities to become anyone’s one-watch collection.
