This weekend, @oliviarodrigo ‘s festival raised $20 million for women and girls.

The singer’s first @daisychainfields festival brought together Chappell Roan, Doechii, Rachel Chinouriri and other artists around reproductive rights, maternal health, workplace protections and gender equality. Rodrigo’s festival generated $10 million for ten nonprofits, including @plannedparenthood, the U.S. National Women’s Law Center and @blackmamasmatter.

Melinda French Gates then pledged another $10 million. Importantly, the grants are largely unrestricted, meaning the organisations decide where the money is most urgently needed rather than having it tied to a celebrity-branded project. The festival also created a “philanthropy village” where audiences could actually meet the organisations.

Can artists truly be apolitical? 🤔

After Macklemore was removed this week from Ed Sheeran’s tour following pro-Palestinian remarks, the fallout quickly blew up online. Supporting acts pulled out. Audiences reacted and Sheeran eventually had to address the situation publicly.

Beyond musicians, in an industry shaped by promoters, venues, record labels, platforms and public pressure, can an artist really stay outside of politics simply by choosing not to speak?

We looked at the research behind celebrity politics, fandom, social media and the increasingly blurry line between cultural influence and political participation.

🎤 American pop is viewed as simply pop. Music from everywhere else usually comes with a tag: Latin. African. And now, Asian.

After five nominations and no wins, BTS announced last month that they would not submit their newest album ARIRANG for the 2027 Grammy Awards. The decision came weeks after the Recording Academy introduced Best Asian Pop Music Performance, a category defined not by the artist’s nationality, but by the use of an Asian language in a song.

Some argue that special categories can create space for artists who have historically been overlooked while others say that they can also allow the main awards to keep presenting themselves as “universal/ standard” while putting everyone else in a box.

What does a Grammy reward when it claims to recognise the Best Artist of the Year? 🤔
