Dear Convergence Community,

It is with deep sadness that we, the organizing team, are writing to inform you that we have decided to postpone our 2021 Arcosanti Convergence. This decision was not made lightly; we have spent hundreds of hours planning this year’s event. We spent many of those hours in meetings this past month agonizing over whether to postpone Convergence another year when so many of us want desperately to come together in community to share and celebrate.

Ultimately though we had to acknowledge that we are volunteer organizers, not a professional event company, and events are difficult to pull off even in the best of circumstances. The risks posed by the ongoing pandemic combined with the logistics of setting safety protocols for an event of several hundred people that would not incite the conflict we have seen in other event spaces this past several months, forced us to face the truth that this beautiful event we have been envisioning since the Spring would have required more stress, resources, and both health and financial risk than we are able to take on. Most critically, it was important for us to listen to the Arcosanti residents on our organizing team who had serious and valid concerns about the safety of the 65 full time community members who live, work, and play at the prototype Arcology.

We are truly heartbroken, and at the same time, we know that this is the most responsible course of action we can take with the information that we have at this time. We’ve put our trust in the idea that making the right decision now, and being honest with you, our community, will be its own reward. The conversations we have had over these past months with contributors, partners, and potential attendees were lights for all of us during what has continued to be a dark and difficult time, and we are as grateful as ever for those who committed to being a part of Convergence 2021 in any capacity.

✨ Artist Spotlight: Arouna Diarra (@arounadiarramusic).

Originally from Burkina Faso, West Africa, Arouna Diarra is an accomplished kamale n'goni player - a 14-string harp-like instrument - who writes and sings in his native language, Bambara. Arouna also creates his own instruments!

As a twelfth-generation musician, Arouna brings traditional West African music into the modern day, further developing it while remaining true to its roots. His live performances often welcome a diverse group of musicians performing as The Ancient Roots Band. Musicians frequently joining Arouna onstage include percussionist Biko Casini and bassist/guitarist David Brown of Rising Appalachia. Whether performing on stage at Red Rocks, the jungle of Costa Rica, or intimate settings like Convergence, Arouna brings joy, harmony, and a connection to traditional African folk music.

As a volunteer, you will become a part of the team that ensures the Convergence will be Zero Waste, COVID safe, and operating like a well-oiled machine. Festival passes are compensated for your work as a volunteer, and positions are limited.

Do you remember being serenaded by @spanishbroomflamenco under the watchful gaze of the full moon? We sure do! Come October, we hope you’ll join us as we make some new memories at the annual @arcosanti_arizona Convergence.

Convergence dawn to dusk 🌅

At Convergence, you can expect a spectrum of opportunities to explore the space and connect with others. In the early morning, you might find yourself activating your body in a movement workshop or taking a guided stroll through the riparian river landscape.

Daytime programming will include our dynamic speaker series interspersed with diverse musical performances and the discovery of enchanting activities and resting spaces nestled throughout the site. Scheduled breaks in programming will allow you to view our Indigenous art gallery & sculpture garden before dusk falls, bringing with it an evening keynote and hours of music that you can expect to be dancing to!

We can't wait to share with you the experiences that we've been creating for this year's gathering - stay tuned for a lineup preview coming very soon!

The initiative will help remove barriers to participation at the Convergence Festival. Scholarships are prioritized for people of limited means and who come from marginalized or underprivileged groups or communities.

🌵 Animals and Plants of Arcosanti.

One of the many reasons to attend Convergence is the gorgeous environment it lives in - the high desert of Arizona. Unlike the saguaro-dotted Sonoran desert to the south and the Colorado Plateau to the north, @arcosanti_arizona sits in a unique riparian ecosystem that is home to a diverse group of animals, plants - and humans! At Arcosanti, you will see red-tailed hawks patrolling the skies (over 200 bird species have been observed at Arco) while you tread through the grasslands and wildflowers circling the main structures.

The Agua Fria river flows through the canyon below Arcosanti, providing respite to the wild animals that roam through the surrounding landscape. You may even encounter a wild skunk as you explore the site! We're grateful for the diversity that our Convergence participants bring to the site, too - can't wait to see everyone in beautiful October! 🍂
