turns out it wasn’t just my life that was changed 💙
“We rip out so much of ourselves to be cured of things faster that we go bankrupt by the age of thirty and have less to offer each time we start with someone new. But to make yourself feel nothing so as not to feel anything — what a waste!
…our hearts and our bodies are given to us only once. And before you know it, your heart is worn out, and, as for your body, there comes a point when no one looks at it, much less wants to come near it. Right now, there’s sorrow, pain. Don’t kill it and with it the joy you’ve felt.”

get to know me in fives 𓇢𓆸
if you know me you know i have a list for everything lol.
all the books, movies, albums, and tv shows included in these slides are so special to me. they aren’t my five favorites for everything (though they are close), they are the five for each that have shaped who i am and who i continue to become. to be understood in media so clearly is the most special feeling and i couldn’t be more grateful to have come across these works of art <3

“le temps d’apprendre à vivre il est déjà trop tard.”
by the time we learn to live, it’s already too late.
a beautiful portrayal of how youth echoes in us for our whole lives, and goes on to echo in those we love.
in ‘find me’ andré aciman touches deeply on insecurity, vulnerability, understanding, empathy, and the way the passing of time effects humans so deeply; while keeping us the same inside.
i believe elio’s father, samuel, to be the most influential character in ‘call me by your name’. the majority of this novel being his story of finding love after separation is beautiful. elio’s connection with his father remained deeply real and ever growing until the very end; even after, samuel found ways to let elio know he saw him, understood him, and loved him. the beauty of their relationship is something many dream of, but never have the chance to feel.
“i want those who outlive me to extend my life, not just to remember it.”
both ‘find me’ and ‘call me by your name’ teach the lesson so clearly that no matter our age, our minds stay the same. our bodies change, our desire does not.
to have courage, to know that anything can be taken away from you at any time, to feel and let yourself get hurt, to lose yourself in life. these are the things we must do to truly live.
by the time i reached elio and oliver’s story, i was so moved and filled with love; only to have it grow.
“the past, the future, what masks they are.”
the importance of time for these two is indescribable. love grown through years of longing; separated, but always together.
“regardless of where we were, who we were with, and whatever stood in our way, all he needed when the time was right was simply to come and find me.”
🩵
side note: samuel naming his son after oliver actually made me cry because i immediately thought of futile devices— “i think of you as my brother, although that sounds dumb”🥹
unexpectedly, but not surprisingly, this novel has become my second favorite of all time; following right after ‘call my by your name.’
what andré aciman writes, i will read.

sally rooney stands with palestine and so should you 🇵🇸
in our current world i find there’s something new every day to be shocked or scared by. as of yesterday, sally rooney’s books will no longer be sold in the UK because of her support of palestine.
“i support palestine action. if that makes me a ‘supporter of terror’ under UK law, so be it.”
the banning of books is one of the most well known tactics of silencing people and beginning totalitarianism. education and knowledge is power. to ban books and silence authors is to take away human freedom, and is one of the many scary things that is happening right now.
palestine has been under attack not for weeks, not for months, but for years. lives are lost everyday. the lack of sympathy in our world and the ability to turn a blind eye is shocking and sickening. sally rooney is a modern author who is honored to stand with palestine, a people who have had the ability to stand up for themselves taken away.
“standing with palestine is the honour of our lives, not a price to pay.”
the banning of sally rooney’s books in the UK is a reminder to all that we must use our voices, we must stand up for what we believe in, and we must never forget that reading is always political.
“any book worth banning is a book worth reading.” - isaac asimov

today is the day! east of eden adaptation is officially on netflix. i can’t wait to see florence pugh as cathy & see the amazing work of everyone else involved with creating this adaption, as well. i have been impatiently waiting since i finished east of eden last fall. this story is so impactful and beautiful, i truly couldn’t be more excited. when i first read east of eden, it found me at a time in my life where I felt mean, evil, and unloveable. when i read the quote “now that you don’t have to be perfect, you can be good”, something shifted in me. this book was exactly what i needed to read at that point in my life. this story is a beautiful representation of the complexity of humans. it shows how if we do not learn and grow, our mistakes will come back to us in new and repeating ways. we must forgive and move forward to not be bound by anger, guilt, and sadness. 🖤
in honor of this exciting day, here are some of my favorite quotes that have sat with me since first reading east of eden by john steinbeck:
“Suddenly he knew joy and sorrow felted into one fabric. Courage and fear were one thing too.”
“No story has power, nor will it last, unless we feel in ourselves that it is true and true of us. What a great burden of guilt men have!… We gather our arms full of guilt as though it were precious stuff. It must be that we want it that way.”
“It did not rise out of his roots and come floating up. He was manufacturing happiness as cleverly as he knew how, molding it and shaping it.”
“Humans are caught—in their lives, in their thoughts, in their hungers and ambitions, in their avarice and cruelty, and in their kindness and generosity too—in a net of good and evil…A man, after he has brushed off the dust and chips of life, will have left only the hard, clean questions: Was it good or was it evil? Have I done well—or ill?”
“All great a precious things are lonely.”

the most wonderful time of the year 🖤⋆₊🕯️.🐦‍⬛
current reads for the start of this month: turn of the screw, the ballad of songbirds and snakes, & the unabridged journals of sylvia plath 🖤
my book club/buddy reads of the month are bones and all & the picture of dorian gray with @julesreadsfiction ♟️
my hopefuls to read are the crucible, a breath of life, poor things, & dracula! i would also like to start a second big read—maybe a little life or jane eyre? haven’t decided yet. i’m always reading the unabridged journals of sylvia plath though (rip to the many highlighters that i’ve drained in my time reading it lol) 🪦
it’s my favorite time of the year. everything is cool and crisp and i feel brand new. i can’t wait to do all the fall activities and spend more time outside. happy october everyone 🖤✧₊⁺🕯⋆.˚🐦‍⬛

the lover: ☆☆☆☆
. ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁ ⟡ ݁ . ⊹ ₊ ݁.
“people ought to be told of such things. ought to be taught that immortality is mortal, that it can die, it’s happened before and it happens still. it doesn’t ever announce itself as such—it’s duplicity itself…it’s while it’s being lived that life is immortal, while it’s still alive. immortality of not a matter of more or less time, it’s not really a question of immortality but of something else that remains unknown. it’s as untrue to say it’s without beginning or end as to say it behind and ends with the life of the spirit, since it partakes both of the spirit and of the pursuit of the void…look at the dead sands of the desert, the dead bodies of the children: there’s no path for immortality there, it must halt and seek another way.”
. ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁ ⟡ ݁ . ⊹ ₊ ݁.
to say i was surprised by this story is an understatement. it is absurd to me to say that this book is only 118 pages, because it contains so much life. the lover by marguerite duras is a portal into a girl’s life filled with mistreatment and complications from the view of herself as an adult. it focuses on themes of age, family, desire, violence, money, and grief. this story jumps through time and sometimes feels like a shift to a whole other world. the vivid description of locations and events make this story feel so real while still giving the sense you’re in a dream.
there are many parts of this story that made my stomach twist and made me shut the page for a moment, for example, the relationship between the young girl and older man. while being the main part of the story, it didn’t become less unsettling at any point. this is not a simple story and it is certainly not a happy one, it is filled with complex characters and complex acts.
for me, the family storyline and the beautifully captivating writing is what makes the lover such a standout. this story has so many themes to reflect on, but what sat with me the most is what duras makes clear regarding her family:
losing people does not always come from death, and having them does not always come from life.
