Here is a lovely barley salad with all kinds of vegetables, seeds and nuts with a tangy dressing with lemon zest. It’s low GI and suitable for people with diabetes. This can be an appetizer or main course with some protein.

I am experimenting with some appetizers and main courses for @Diabetescanada #apronsinaction campaign. This is an exciting fundraising event taking place throughout the summer into the fall for #diabetes research, education, and programs for Canadians living with diabetes.

Join me and help me raise money and raise awareness.. join the community and join the movement.

Last week I was fortunate to check out @kingcoleducks farms with @farmfoodcareon as part of education and awareness trip. They just north of Toronto and it was quite amazing how they rise their ducks from eggs to products.

I was able to taste their products and it was so juicy and tasty. They have a retail store with so many duck products and beef products.

I tasted their skewers, spring rolls and duck confit - so tasty. I wish I could’ve bought some eggs as they are so tasty and rich but since traveling in the subway I bought some skewers, duck confit and dusk bones for stock. Check them out!

Palm Sprouts are healthy fibrous edible snacks that’s enjoyed in Asia, South America, Caribbean and Africa - wherever palm trees are found. These tubers are grown by planting palm fruits in the dirt. Palm fruits take 3 to 6 months to germinate. Once they are ready a small plant will come to the surface and the roots (tubers), sprouts are dug out and harvested. I used to eat them as a snack after school when my grandmother would boil them in salted water.

Sprouts are washed well to remove dirt, and boiled for 20-30 minutes in salted water. The husk can be easily removed and enjoyed.

They are high in fibre and a good source of iron, rich in calcium. For 100 grams of sprouts - calories 53, carb 11.5 grams, 0 fat. Since it’s low in carb and it’s low carb so it’s suitable for people with diabetes. I really enjoyed them on my visit to India earlier this month.

It’s was such a great evening to visit Nagore with my cousins sons as they are great foodies - The prime attraction of the town is the Nagore Dargah Shareef. A sixteenth-century Islamic shrine, Nagore Dargah attracts millions of pilgrims irrespective of caste, creed or religion.

They are also famous for their sweets - gulab jammon, palkova and their best and unique sweets is dhumrot - it’s like a halva but has a grainy texture and unlike anything you’ve tasted before.

If you go next time to Tamil Nadu make sure you visit Nagapattinam and Nagore - and don’t forget Rafeek sweet shop, just behind the mosque.

Snow day in Canada - in Toronto. We had over 23 cm (almost a foot of snow). I had my errands to get done as many things got cancelled but I needed to get my medications from my pharmacy so I decided to venture out in the morning. The street was almost empty as my street is busy with people, cars, dog walkers.. many stayed inside. The main street where I live off of (St. Clair) was empty too. Not too many cars, the only time it was this empty was during the pandemic. I am glad the streetcars were still running - thank you @takethettc Toronto Transit Commission for getting me to the pharmacy. The snow plows were busy cleaning the highways as some parts of some major highways were shutdowns and many collisions.

Dear diabetes, my name is Siva and I am a chef - whether I am cooking for a gig or developing a recipe, my type 1 diabetes never takes a break. In the background, corner of my mind I am always thinking about my diabetes (my blood sugars) and wondering if I am in range, if I am going to have a hypo (low blood sugars) or when I can plan my break to have a snack or my next meal.

So it’s like juggling a balloon in the air all the time. Diabetes never takes a break - it’s a balancing act. @medtronicdiabetescanada @medtronicdiabeteslatam @medtronicdiabetes

It’s hard to take a break when you are performing everyday activities or doing some important task - you can’t turn off the task - similarly you can’t turn off “diabetes”. So a lot of planning needs to be in place so my “diabetes” is happy, it’s a great balancing act.

This year I am taking part in the blue balloon challenge and helping raise awareness about diabetes as November is diabetes awareness month.

I was fortunate to attend the event by Taste Canada last week called “Cooks the Books” at @cirillos.academy - it’s a students cooking competition from all the culinary schools across Canada. This year we had 7 different schools. The event also had kitchen judges and Tasting judges.

Each student an hour to make a balanced plate with protein, veg and carb choice. The event was sponsored by Canada Beef and Dainty food (rice) - so much creativity and passion. I was happy to see attend and talk their colleges and proud family and friends.

My biggest take away was meeting a professor on Food as medicine (Cathy Conley) @flavourwithbenefits and her husband Charley Best - grandson of Dr. Best who discovered insulin (with Dr. Banting) @charliebest6060 wow what an honour and afternoon !

Wonderful meeting Francoise Briet and tasting her products @maltyandhoppydelicacy so good if you’ve not had ach ace to try them, they are great with cheese! @tastecanadaawards @cdnfoodfocus @farmfoodcareon

Check out the competition videos and some of the dishes created at the end of the video. I was super happy to meet the contestants and families of the contestants. The last picture is the silver medal winners from the competition!

Such a lovely day celebrating India’s Independence Day 🇼🇳 at Toronto Cityhall with the whole family. We were on time to catch the parade of various floaters from each states, sample amazing food and catch some entertainment.

My daughter was proud to stand by Telangana float while I rooted for Tamil Nadu - lots of dancing - my hubby was there to cheer us on, such a fun day. Toronto is such a great city for multiculturalism and diversity - it’s such a great melting pot - if you’ve not been to Toronto come and check it out and give me a call. I’ll take you around and be your tour guide.

What relaxes you? Whats your guilty pleasure? For me it’s always looking for a great deal - and many years ago I started to venture into flea markets, garage sales and antique markets.

I am a collector of vintage unique leather bags, jewelry and small antiques. I am very knowledgeable about gems and stones and love hunting for collectibles. I love looking for them and enjoy a good bargain and of course wearing them - eventually someday I’ll have a shop. Right now I am just enjoying the hunt.

I was at the Big Tent Heritage Antique Market at Centerpoint Mall (Yonge & Steele) on Sunday. And I came across these two fine finds. I spotted them in a pile of jewels all for $5 each - their value is quite high, great score if you can spot them.

Jet is a type of lignite, the lowest rank of coal, and is a gemstone but not precious. Unlike many gemstones, jet is not a mineral, but is rather a mineraloid. Jet is plant-based (pressure from millions of years turns into coal) mineraloid, meaning it’s mineral-like. It’s also an organic gemstone alongside amber, pearl, coral etc.

Jet is very much treasured for centuries, a big gem stone during Victorian times and it’s highly collectible.

Larimar is a rare and unique blue gemstone found only in the Dominican Republic. Larimar is known for its striking blue colour with white or light sky blue marbling. Larimar is a type of blue pectolite. Pectolite containing copper is known as larimar. This lovely pale blue gemstone is becoming more difficult to get. It’s also a healing stone - and people wear it as a remover of “worry” and “stress”.

Larimar with a sterling silver bale and the 3 strand jet necklace are highly valued - a great score and can’t wait to wear them both. Follow me for more treasure hunt .. message me if you have questions.

We were recently in Montreal for our anniversary and had a lovely lunch at Bouillon Bilk - 4 course prix fixe lunch - we loved it so much. I am sharing their inventive, innovative menu - and we had wines to match our food too. The price is a bargain for a 4 course meal and I highly recommend this restaurant in Montreal. It’s in downtown St. Catherine street, one of the main streets in downtown for tourists to visit. @montreal_eat @montrealmunches @montrealnibbles @montreal @bouillon_bilk_

I recently traveled to the USA for a family wedding with my family - and had a great experience at the Air Canada lounge, and I am so happy the service is awesome. @aircanada

Our trip was early in the day - it was lovely to see the sunrise while driving to the airport and we had a seamless check in, security and passport controls. I had the best experience at the Air Canada USA lounge - we got there for breakfast and enjoyed the lovely choice of food but since we were in between time, the lunch service started and I couldn’t pass up their Jamaican treat - peas & rice, sweet potatoes and jerk chicken, it was simply delicious. It tasted very authentic. So glad I had a small plate since I just love Jamaican food.

Thanks @Aircanada for the amazing service, lounge and taking us to our destination on time without delay. We also used the service of assistance since my mother has mobility issues, the service was seamless - they took wonderful care of us until we were inside the plane.

We also had a great experience going to the USA without any issues. I know many are worried about traveling to the USA, but we had no issues and the border agents were very friendly and our passport control was very swift without any issues or delay. It was really important for us to attend our family wedding in the USA and so happy that Air Canada made it as easy as possible.
