Day 31! We’ve made it! I’m honestly super happy with myself for having made it a whole month doing this and while this is the last day of this challenge, I’ll still be posting stuff. Today I did Dean Town by @vulfpeck . I love this song. It’s not very well suited for trumpet but I just love the baseline so much that I had to learn it just to say I could. And I could! Which I’m super impressed by! It’s funky and it’s non diatonic, and it’s a 16 bar long melody which is very uncommon. I love it and I’m glad that it could be the song that I close out the challenge with! Day 30! Tomorrow is my last day of daily videos but I’ll keep going in some capacity. Today I played solar winds by @twrpband . It’s an interlude song, but I really like the vibe. I honestly really like albums that have songs like this, just aesthetically pleasing pieces to transition from one song to another. Day 29! Today was a request from @sleepynomnoms : Ma Belle Evangeline from the Princess and the Frog soundtrack. It was a ice easy song to learn and it has a lovely feel to it. It’s fun to be able to play around with a melody where I can, even though I try to match the recording as much as possible, and I tried a little of that today! Day 28! Today I learned Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder. This is an old song that I actually played in high school, but the arrangement lowkey sucked so I never got the whole picture. I never realized how difficult it was though. It’s in B major, which for me is C# major, one of the hardest and most awkward keys you can play in on trumpet. It was actually pretty difficult to learn because of this but it was still fun. We’re nearing the end, but I’m still gonna be learning songs even after I’m done! Day 27! We’re almost done with daily posts! Today I actually did 2 songs: Rock the House by Gorillaz and Cariño by the Marías. I really wanted to do both of these since I really like them but I didn’t feel like either had enough trumpet playing to warrant their own videos. So I just decided to put them into one! I’ve only recently been fairly recently introduced to these songs by friends and I know there are several people that will be very happy that I played these. Day 26! Today I learned the incredibles theme by Michael giacchino (and Gordon Goodwin). This is a hard one! It’s super high and while it is fun it was not easy at all. Day 25! Today I did Louis Armstrong’s version of la Vie en Rose. Today is Mother’s Day and I’m dedicating this to @mikirst93 since this song reminds me of her (probably because of her love of France). I love this song, and I have for a long time, but I wanted to play it for her as a little Mother’s Day gift. Happy Mother’s Day! Day 23? I’m losing track at this point tbh. Today is Wild Side by ALI. This is the opening theme from the show I talked about yesterday, Beastars. I legitimately love both this song and the intro to the show so much because they mix so many cool things together. The song has a bunch of cool jazz moments while still being sort of rock-ish and even having a touch of ALI’s otherwise hip hop and RnB background. The intro is done with stop motion, which I love, and it tells a really intriguing story about the show, which makes you want to watch more, and there’s even proper swing dancing! Day 22 of learning a song every day! Today I did the main theme from Beastars by Satoru Kosaki and Ryuichi Takada. I love the sort of French vibe this song has and it’s a really interesting and cool piece to put to the show. The show itself is one of my favorites and it dives into some really cool themes. Day 21! Today is Cat Blues from the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack! Another really great one from this soundtrack. I love the sorta sneaky vibes I get from this tune and it’s really fun to play too. So much of that middle section is non-diatonic, and there are tritone jumps everywhere and it’s really weird but surprisingly not that hard to learn. I guess that means I’m getting better at this! Day 20! Today is the Sonata for Trumpet and Piano by Kent Kennan, my Jury piece! For those of you who don’t know, a jury is like a final for music school, where you have to play a piece in front of a panel of judges. I’ve been working on this piece since the beginning of the semester and this is the final product of my work! Now you might be asking yourself: “Cooper, aren’t you breaking your own rules by posting something you didn’t learn in a day and didn’t learn by ear?” Yes!
