I put my name in the NCAA transfer portal last spring.

I didn’t really have a plan to leave, but I wanted to understand my options. It’s the world of college athletics now — see who calls, see what’s out there. And some big-time programs did call. Places where I could’ve gotten NIL money, maybe played more minutes, maybe lived somewhere warmer.

But the whole time, I kept thinking about what I already had.

Coaches who trust me. A system that fits the way I play. A campus that feels like home. Teammates who feel like brothers. I’ve lived and played with some of these guys for four years. That doesn’t really happen anymore.

In a lot of college programs, half the roster changes every year. Guys leave if they don’t play enough or if they play great and want to move up. That’s just how it goes now. The Ivy League is different. There’s no NIL money changing hands, no quick transfers, no shortcuts. People come here because they want to grow together.

When I told Coach Jaques I was exploring my options, he didn’t guilt-trip me. He just said that ‘He was proud of me, and that whatever happens, he was still in my corner.’ I’m certain he was frustrated, but he was patient with me and honored my decision. That told me everything about who he is, which was no surprise. It confirmed that I knew what this program was about the right things.

I talked to some amazing coaches through the process and had some incredible conversations — but none of it felt better than Cornell. It was flattering. It really was.

The culture here is different. It’s built on work, trust and actual friendship.

So yeah, I went in the portal, and then I came back out.

I already had everything I was looking for at Cornell, and that was worth more than anything someone else could offer.
