Oct 1, 2004 - Dave Matthews' improv acoustic guitar jam/(scat) from a gig at Penn State on this date in 2004.

These interval based guitar jams in the 90s on the black chet guitar and then in the early 00s on the Taylor guitars are what inspired me to learn how to play guitar in 1998 at 21rs old. I'm sure I'm not alone in finding this sound infectious to the point of wanting to be able to play around w/ it yourself......there's never a reason not to pick up an instrument. Thanks to Dave's inspiration and spending time learning (by just trying to play "dmbtabs.com" transcriptions that were created explicitly from videos/Shoutout to @jkanter !!) led to so many amazing sunset nights on a beach in Naples FL jamming w/ friends I made later on.....

(I ramble and type with minimal proof reading so you know I care about what I say and that none of the my comments on instagram are AI generated - but sorry for my poor writing nontheless)

This video is from a relatively popular fan DVD that was compiled from 4 different minidv camcorder sources by @jeffreyfate and circulated a year or so later. I believe the taper audio was taped by Eric Naylor (akg481 source) - sorry if I'm off on that.

September 23, 2006 - "Shotgun" (from its debut tour) - Dave Matthews Band - John Paul Jonest Arena - Charlottesville, VA - UVA
---
So real, what has become of us?
follow the avalanche down
to see what it busted up
maybe we best wait out, oh my yeah
what has become of us?
maybe we should go dancing
better than follow the bombs down
going down away

Dave Matthews and that jacket in ~1996

Random clip from a Much Music (Canadian MTV) special. I know I've posted this cap (from a VHS compilation tape I have somewhere) for the cool Tripping Billies acoustic clip the band is seen playing in an office boardroom, but seems a bit relevant now w/ Dave wearing this same coat again and mentioning its age in recent weeks (ie: at the Gorge)

September 22. 2006 - Master Mini-DVs (2 camcorder/tripod sources) of DMB's concert which opened UVA's new JPJ arena in 2006.

20yrs ago today.

My full show video mix of this show is on youtube - can find it by searching DMB 9/22/06. The "Two Step" set closer w/ Robert Randolph is pretty great .

September 19, 2003 - (Drunk Man Intro) Dancing Nancies - Starwood Amphitheatre - Antioch, TN

Antioch used to get some good shows....I always wanted a release of 8/7/98 w/ the random Say Goodbye + Béla Fleck show closer.....+other unique Béla song guest spots at that time....

September 14, 2003 - LeRoi solo during the outro to "Spoon" - Dave Matthews Band - Virginia Beach, VA.

This version of "Spoon" was featured on the Central Park bonus CD, so I assume it's been aired on Sirius as well.

Great version - I've always loved Roi's solo lines on this one + it's nice to a nice recording of it (SBD-Mastered/Released Audio + MiniDV master footage shot w/ camcorder+monopod)

September 4, 2004 - Dave "breaks a string" audibly at ~6sec when you can hear that the string rips out from the bottom of the neck (unusual). Monk(pretty sure was him at the time) brings him a new guitar, and you can hear the added punch of what his Taylor guitar brings to the song when he gets back in ~33sec.

September 1, 1995 - Early #41 (akla "41 Police") - University At Albany - NY

"This is a song about staying back", "And in all honesty -staaaay- back from the stage" - Dave addressing crowd surfers at this DMB show just before beginning this 1995 pre-cursor to #41. A member of the band or crew felt this new songs sounded like Sting's band "The Police" hence the common WIP name, "41 Police".

At this point in 1995, DMB were in the middle of the planning stages for their next album, "Crash" ('96). This loose lyricless incarnation of #41 got a lot of play that summer. The road tested jam was retooled/finalized in the studio w/ Lillywhite that fall, then finally released in the Spring of '96.

90s videos of DMB aren't all that common. It's really cool we do have this one, as it captures the raw drive DMB had to be something different yet very much themselves in a post-Nirvana/Grunge landscape.

August 26, 2006 - "Butterfly" - Dave Matthews (Band) - Solo E1 - Chula Visa, CA

Great rarity, and in particular I love these versions w/ the little acoustic bridge (~2min here) - late 2006 evolution iirc that mostly went away on the handful of later performances. For me, the sound of that bridge kinda resonates with the feeling of realizing this show/video is 20yrs old today.....nice listen for the first time in a while....

Film crd: Ethan Sinclair (Damien Negrotto) - my cap from the master Mini-DV tape.
