Over the past few weeks I have had to quickly develop some technical agility on bass clarinet after hopping in wind symphony last minute. Here are some of my fav moments from the 1st movement of John Mackey’s new symphony.

I always tell people if I had to choose one instrument to play forever it would be bass. Best of both worlds!

Thanks to @braydensax I got a go at the one take challenge. Tbh this was scary for me but was a good lesson in some things I have been pondering on lately.

1, being the general balance of technique and musicality. I always struggle to put energy into both at the same time and always see technical cleanliness as a prerequisite to musicality in my own playing. But in the end, when I have the one take to play (in recording or performance) and it doesn’t go perfectly, then left standing is just a sloppy run with no character at all. All of this to say, my eyes are feeling more open to just being as expressive as possible in all my playing from day 1.

2, being afraid of how I sound. I personally feel so much pressure from myself to have the best tone I have ever had all the time. It’s just something that is not realistic (especially when playing cane in the midwest) and derails so much of my mental state and productivity in the practice room. I think striving for greatness is fabulous, but demanding perfection is just something I have to learn to let go of in myself.

The Ibert… a piece I feel like I always dabble with and then bail on. This time around it’s been different for me and it has been such a great teacher for lots of things. I definitely wish I had stuck it out in my earlier days.

One of my favorite moments from my recital was sharing the gorgeous music of Andy Scott’s “And Everything Is Still”. As I began preparation for this recital, I began to subtly draw parallels from these works to places I know well. One of the most moving to me being Mercer St (John and Jim Obergefell Way).

I had the pleasure of meeting Jim back in February, and then just a week or so later happened to stumble upon his former residence and a mural in his honor. In every way this music represents the peace and pride that this place brings to me and I am so thankful to have shared that with one of my most dear friends @evan11kershaw
