I usually save my “it’s time to give back” posts for December.

This year, the time is now.

Two of my favorite steelhead rivers are closing this August because there simply aren’t enough wild fish returning.

So instead of spending what I would have spent chasing wild steelhead this month, I sent that money to @native_fish_society

This morning.

I’m also bidding on a few #FliesForSpokane auctions and making a donation to @innoviafoundation . Watching @millsfly and the fly fishing community rally around Spokane has been one of the bright spots of the past week. taken in PNW by @corbinbrands

Besides needing readers to tie on small dry flies, the other telltale sign I’m aging as an angler is that I’ve started trading trout size for trout solitude.

For the second straight year, the first signs of hoot owl restrictions sent me to the alpine.

The backcountry is unfishable for most of the year. Paradise for maybe three months. Probably two.

It’s quickly becoming one of my favorite ecosystems.
