Sana & Ara

Photograph: My maternal cousins, Sana and Ara, wait for a picture. My beloved aunt Ita dressed them up for the occasion and took them to the studio to capture a moment in their early years.

I adore the details in their clothing most.

Delicate memories ask us not only how we remember, but how we hold what has been remembered.

A colour photograph recording an informal family gathering outdoors. Adults and children are gathered together beside a low stone wall, surrounded by the ordinary objects of a shared meal during an outing (sayran).

This photograph comes from my family archive. I do not know the exact date, location, or who took the photograph, but I recognise the people in it and the relationships that connect them.

The children are my maternal cousins, Razjan and Tazjan. Tazjan is sitting on the wall beside her aunt, Xanda. Among the adults are my maternal aunt Kwestan, wearing red, Nana Lou in the white headscarf, Bestoun, my aunt’s husband, and his sisters Kwestan in purple, and Khelan in white.

Nana Lou was not my grandmother by blood, but she held an important place within this family and mine. She was the matriarchal head of her household and was deeply loved by many. Looking at the photograph now, I know something about her that the image itself cannot communicate. I know her place within the family, the relationships surrounding her, and something of the affection she carried.

Through these images, I can memorialise the people I have known and loved, keeping a trace of them visible.

Photograph: My Great Uncle Fereydoon and wife, Nageeda’s wedding party.

Xala Fereydoon stands between his sisters, Lufti (left) and Dimen. Fereydoon’s sister,Ahwaz, gleefully peers in (pictured behind him). Nageeda, holding flowers, stands next to my mother, Rezan. The attending children stand in front, admiring the scene.

⭐️Note the details of dress, accessories and facial expressions; all play a part in this scene. My favourite detail is the adornment of traditional Kurdish necklaces, classic pearls and Nageeda’s clutch on her flowers.

Yezidi men photographed by Latif Al Ani (1968)

Latif Al Ani (1932-2021) known as the “father of Iraqi photography” was the first to capture extensively the cosmopolitan life of Iraq in the 1950s-1970s. His black and white images represent a unique visual memory of the country during its golden age and a major postcolonial heritage. [Morad Montazami] by @cordu.ene

Portrait of Hama Karim Mahmood sitting in a Tawella cafe. A peshmerga soldier during the late 1960s, a conscript into the Saddam-era Iraqi Army, then a peshmerga once again… Hama had many great stories to tell symbolic of the region. He is wearing a traditional “faranji” vest, handmade from wool in the Hawraman region of Kurdistan.
