For The Story of Birds, I totally lucked out. We had the incredibly talented @cordulamarks do the interior art: a bird to open each chapter and a few montages peppered throughout the book!What can I say about Cordy? Her whimsical but scientifically rigorous style speaks for itself. A few months ago she visited us @uoegeosciences to show our palaeo group how she works. She brought some of her finished pieces that appear in the book, like this striking action shot of a deadly (but kinda fluffy and cute) terror bird on the tail of a tasty mammal. And she brought many drafts to show us how she designs and composes a piece. Seeing her process, her skills in action, it just blew me away, as I have absolutely no artistic talent (at least in terms of visual art; maybe some of you might consider my blabbering words to be a type of ‘art’, who knows?)But the best thing about Cordy is how enthusiastic she is. She’s based in Edinburgh and I’ve know her for several years now. She saved my butt with this book, as we had to ask her to step in last minute and do all of this art. And I mean last minute: she had just a few weeks to finish about 20 birds! I’ll be forever grateful. Thank you Cordy!!!Cordy does art of great variety, but is getting more into palaeo art. Hiya pals, yes, that’s me at @waterstones_edi , Princes Street, next to the front desk, holding a copy of this truly captivating, gorgeously written book “The Story of Birds” by the wonderful @steve.brusatte You can probably guess how excited I am to see this book out in the wild. I created some of the illustrations (cue Compsognathus 😊) for this fantastic book and it was a total labour of love. Huge THANKS to Steve, for giving me this awesome opportunity - I loved every minute working on the illustrations- and to @picadorbooks and @peterlorillardhubbard. Hiya pals, I hope you’re all having a great week so far and, for all you lovely people who are taking part in this year’s #100daysprojectscotland, I hope you’re already having a blast 😊 I’m skipping this year as I’ve got quite a lot of work to get through this summer but I’m rooting for you from the sidelines. Anyway, I made a new series of micro dinosaurs in a tin, which I took to the Deep Time Gala event at the Edinburgh Dynamic Earth centre yesterday. Most of them have left the herd but I’ve got a few left. So if you want to adopt a Ceratopsian dinosaur or Raptor in a portable tin, drop me a DM. The amazing @steve.brusatte has got a new book out and it is a true marvel! “The Story of Birds” is already in the NYT Bestseller list and it’s easy to see why. It’s a gorgeous read, one that will stay with you for a very long time. If you love birds, you’ll love them even more. Here it is! My first time seeing The Story of Birds, the actual final published book. Whoa!!And gorgeous it is. Look at that cover art by Todd Marshall! The interior art (of elephant birds and colossus penguins) by @cordulamarks ! The scientific line art by Sarah Shelley! The photographs by @fieldpalaeo ! I am revelling in it! While in DC on leg one of the book tour, filming with Big Think and visiting @natgeo. Working on the colour scheme for the first chapters/book of the #graphicnovelseries I am currently working on. Hiya pals, had a great day at the RSA private viewing for the SSA 127th annual exhibition. What a privilege it is to be surrounded by such mind-blowing, beautiful art in this amazing, iconic gallery. The @societyscottishartists did a fantastic job - the exhibition is curated beautifully and there’s so much to explore and marvel at.
