A large-scale study (Arens et al., 2022) comparing clinical patients to the general population found clear patterns:

✔️ People with mental disorders tend to 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫, 𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞
❌ They 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐦 (eg. joy, spontaneity, pleasure), 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬
⚠️ Most striking: they experience significantly 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐬, like striving for both control and freedom, or success and humility.

We had our research picked up and published by Harvard Business Review, with the heading “Research: Do LLMs Have Values?” (published today, 2 May 2025).

It shows that the answer is likely yes and we can measure them!

Working with the brilliant researchers at AI Alt Lab we ran the same Portrait Values Questionnaire‑Revised (PVQ‑RR) that powers the Core Values Finder across 9 of today’s most‑used LLMs (eg ChatGPT‑4o, Grok 2, and DeepSeek).
