The Shark Fin. First Ascent by Brooks Piersol. Buts it’s not about FA’s. It’s about the process.

The process of hiking around to find a climb that he is excited to try. We passed on a few that I was excited for him to try but this was the one he wanted!

Whitehall Montana.

While at the climbing gym one day, Brooks asked what lead climbing was. My first reaction was ‘you are too young to lead climb’. He was pretty bummed.

My objective is to create passion in my kids. Not force them to do what I love. So it broke my heart telling he couldn’t do something that he genuinely wanted to do. So I came up with this idea. As soon as we got home quick draws were hanging and the boys were learning how to clip!

Covering some basics! Try to keep the hips open, close to the wall, and your hook toe pointing away or downward. I am still working on pointing my toe down so trying to make sure the boys get it right early on.

Taking shorter steps makes conquering steeper hills easier and is easier on the quads!

At 5, I try to set with a balance of challenging moves that are still fun moves. Often it’s with good holds but bigger moves and good feet. At this age it’s more about having fun and less about becoming a professional climber…

Keeping my boys engaged or interested can be tough. One trick I learned was to encourage them to bring home a keepsake from the hike. I try to leverage it as a reward for finishing the hike or activity.

Not sure how this conversation got started but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity. Kids do say the darndest things!

Pork Spare ribs St. Louise style.

Been struggling pairing BBQ sauce with dry rubs so instead of adding a BBQ sauce when I wrap my ribs I just added more seasoning paired with my ‘mop’ sauce or spritz.

Coat with @beardedbutcherblend Original seasoning.

Coal pan set to the bottom. Lump coal with soaked @bourbonbarrelcalls wood chips.

Ambient temps :: 150/175F for an hour :: 200F for an hour or so :: 225F to finish.

Spritz every 30. 2oz Molasses:: 5oz Jack Daniels Whiskey :: 5oz ACV.

Flip ribs every hour.

Wrap at hour 4. Place in aluminum foil face down in more seasoning and spritz sauce.

Smoke open for 3 hours. Wrap for an hour or until you reach your desired consistency. I like my ribs tender but still on the bone. Cook longer of you want them to fall off the bone.

Let rest open for 15 and enjoy!

These turned out delicious. The seasoning is salty and a packs a little heat. The molasses adds a bit of sweetness which pairs perfect with that salt and heat.
