i’d rather be a groomsman than a pallbearer .

i’d rather reunite with the friends that we’ve grown up with and our families for a different occasion .

i’d rather put a halt to everything i’m trying to accomplish and just take a break from life but life keeps moving along . still gotta workout . still gotta do that concert i got booked for and promote it all over my socials . still gotta do that interview i agreed to . still gotta work . still gotta audition for that musical i’ve heard about .

no matter how many times i have studied and taught the Plan of Salvation , nothing really could’ve prepared me for this .

i remember the calls i would have with both of y’all about life and how we were trying to do what we love in this life as long as we could . i remember complaining to y’all about football and how i felt i was working out for nothing , but then y’all would remind me of how y’all wanted to play again and to be grateful for the position i’m in .

fiti wanted to be a librarian . he was always reading and we’d read comic books together growing up . we’d watch all the new marvel movies and debrief once we got home .
some people talk about convincing their parents to have a sleepover with their cousin . i convinced my parents to get him to live with us . we’d watch the flash , rush hour movies , and martin until like 4am and act like we were sleeping when my father would come check in on us , haha

people talk a lot about his athleticism , but David was also an artist . he had a gifted voice and unique style . we were planning on making another song like we did in high school once i came back to Texas . that video of him coming to my music video is the perfect example of how he’s been supporting me and vice versa since we were in 5th grade .
two athletes , two creatives , two hardworking men , and two men i saw as bigger brothers as i was growing up even though we were the same age . always wanted to be as cool as them .
anytime someone would give me a hard time in school , they’d always back me up . they were always supportive in everything i did .

it’s okay to “see color“ , it is how you treat the person with a different skin color that’s important .

i am extremely grateful and honored to have been invited to represent @churchofjesuschrist and @brighamyounguniversity as we fellowshipped with the @naacp in Ghana . while serving others and learning the Ghanaian culture , we discussed what we can do to break down racial barriers and had uncomfortable , yet important conversations . we were also able to go and see different locations of where the transatlantic slave trade occurred and that experience truly changed my life . i cannot imagine being treated like an animal due to the complexion of my skin and being separated from my family .

while some may say this is far behind us , many still tend to have their own stigmas on people that look like me and many also have their own stigmas on people that are a part of the religion that i am a part of . through this experience , we were able to help bridge that gap between my beloved religion and black culture . at the end of the day , i know where i stand with our Heavenly Father and i know that we are all Children of Him . i know that i am a Child of God , a Child of the Covenant , and a Disciple of Jesus Christ . i was that before i was given any worldly , man-made label .

2 Nephi 26:33

my grandmother is officially in the blues hall of fame .

she’s a left-handed guitarist and singer-songwriter who helped pave the way for black women in the music industry. she made history with her music, including her hit record “You’ll Lose a Good Thing,” and used her voice and guitar to spread love and joy around the world.

she set an example and a standard for our family to follow. we celebrated her countless hours of determination, discipline, and hard work—day in and day out. It was truly inspiring.

she’s shown us that our goals are reachable and that believing in yourself matters no matter the circumstance. through the grace of God, we know there are no limits—only His will.
