It’s pub day— hello, ocean! Is officially out in the world!

This is the story of a small girl and a day at the beach. It is part celebration – of sand and waves, pelicans and seaweed, clamshells and driftwood and moonstones.

Also, in a world full of problems that can feel beyond our reach, this is a book about finding a problem in a place that you love, doing something about it with your own hands… and how powerful that can be.

It is also a glimpse into how love for a place can be passed on, from one generation to the next.

While working on thie book I’ve been collecting plastic bottle caps (for over a year) and picking up garbage, along the way I’ve also found treasures— moonstones and agates, sea glass and some beautiful rope I turned into a bracelet. All of this made its way into the book.

Birbirleriyle nasıl geçineceklerini unutan bir topluluğun hikâyesini anlatan, son derece absürt ve özgün bir peri masalı…

İlk kavga, kralın sakalındaki düğümü açmak için bir tarağın mı yoksa fırçanın mı daha iyi olacağı üzerine çıkmıştı. Sonra harf ve kaşık kavgaları geldi. Derken sürekli kavga etmeye başladılar, o kadar ki artık kimse kavganın ne zaman başladığını, ne hakkında olduğunu veya kim tarafından başlatıldığını hatırlayamıyordu. Sadece her zaman kavga ettiklerini ve bunu çok iyi yaptıklarını biliyorlardı.

Böylece kral ve kraliçe, ülkenin EN İYİ kavgacısını seçmek için bir yarışma düzenlemeye karar verdiler. Peki ya herkes kavga etmekle meşgulken unuttukları şeyi nasıl hatırlayacaklardı?

Corinna Luyken, Oregon, Kaliforniya ve Hawaii’de büyüdü; Vermont’taki Middlebury College’da dans doğaçlaması, şiir ve baskı resim eğitimi aldı. Şu anda Batı Washington’da, Salish Denizi yakınlarında yaşıyor ve toprağı kazmayı, sörf yapmayı ve kucağında bir (ya da iki) kediyle kitap okumayı seviyor. Luyken’in çalışmaları doğaçlamaya dayanıyor ve bağlantı, algı ve yanlış algılama temalarını araştırıyor. Some books ask to be read at the ocean, not just about it, and this is one of them. 🌊

Corinna Luyken's hello, ocean! is a love letter to the sea and to the quiet, wide-open feeling of standing in front of something so much bigger than you. In her signature sweeping line work and washes of blue and gold, Luyken captures the full emotional range of an ocean visit, awe, wonder, a little bit of fear, and the pure joy of running headlong into the waves.

What makes this a "mood shelf" pick isn't just the gorgeous illustration (though look at that hair, that movement, that light). It's how the book validates big feelings in nature. The ocean is loud, unpredictable, sometimes scary, and the book doesn't shy away from that. It lets kids feel small and amazed at the same time and gives language to that overwhelm-turned-wonder that so many of us remember from our first real encounter with the sea.

It's a gentle nudge toward mindfulness too noticing the sound of the waves, the salt in the air, the rhythm of tides without ever feeling like a lesson. Just presence, dressed up as poetry.

A perfect read before (or after) a beach day. 💙
