Nine years ago, I posted this photograph of my mother and me in the Dominican Republic with a simple message: Gracias, Mami, por enseñarme la verdad. 🇩🇴❤️

Today, on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, that gratitude remains.

My mother taught me to question the history we were handed, to recognize the violence of colonization, and to understand that our African and Indigenous histories deserve to be remembered, honored, and told truthfully.

As an Afro-Dominican woman, I carry those lessons with me. Our history did not begin with Columbus, and our humanity was never his to discover.

The truth is an inheritance. So is resistance.

Gracias siempre, Mami. ❤️
