What does undergraduate research really look like? 🤔💻📈🦾

At Cornell Bowers, it means testing ideas, asking tough questions, learning from setbacks, and making impactful discoveries along the way.

Since launching in 2023, the Bowers Undergrad Research Experience has been a springboard for dozens of undergraduate researchers who’ve gone on to author published papers, win undergraduate research awards, and ultimately pursue doctoral degrees.

“There are times when I’m like, ‘What am I doing? Is this pointless?’ But then you remember that this is why research exists – to ask hard questions and pursue them,” reflects Nolan Lizmi ‘27. “You’re supposed to be hitting these dead ends and rethinking everything. This is part of the scientific process.”

This process didn’t discourage any students – not Myles Pasetsky ‘27, the roboticist; Cindy Weng ‘27, the economist statistician; Oded Harazi ‘29, the user-interface designer, nor Nolan Lizmi, the computational astronomer. The opposite, in fact: each said they’re strongly considering graduate school after graduation.

What if AI could better illustrate not just people, but their interactions? 👥👥👥

“The current models for image generation can produce beautiful humans, but accurately capturing an interaction, and doing so in a diverse manner, is still a challenge,” said Wenxuan Peng, doctoral student in computer science.

Cornell researchers are teaching image-generation models to capture the subtle dynamics between multiple people, making AI-created scenes more realistic than ever. taken in Cornell University by @cornell.bowers

When patients arrive at the ER, a shocking number have errors or misinformation in their medical documents. 🚑🏥📄

Jonathan Segal, a Cornell Bowers Ph.D. student in information science based at Cornell Tech, is using AI and augmented reality to provide guidance to clinicians and automatically generate documentation for patient handoffs.

He aims to improve teamwork at hospitals and save lives with more accurate information transfer for patients. taken in Cornell University by @cornell.bowers

Most design projects start with user feedback. This one started with a parakeet. 🦜

Information science doctoral student Nanyi Jiang worked alongside her parakeet, Shiso, to create a wearable perch shaped by the bird’s own preferences.

Through trial, error and plenty of enthusiastic prototype destruction, Shiso helped guide the design: if she ignored an idea, it was out. If she chewed it to pieces, that was actually a good sign.

The project is part of a growing effort to design technology with animals, not just for them. Because maybe the users should have a say in the design, even when they have feathers. 🪶 taken in Cornell University by @cornell.bowers

Gilles Brassard, Ph.D. ’79, has received the 2025 A.M. Turing Award from the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), jointly with Charles Bennett, for founding the field of quantum information science and for new encryption technology for secure communication and computing.

At the age of 24, Brassard received his Ph.D. in theoretical computer science from Cornell, working with John E. Hopcroft, professor emeritus of computer science and a 1986 Turing Award recipient.

“Gilles Brassard’s BB84 protocol laid the foundation for quantum information science and reshaped the future of secure communication,” said Lorenzo Alvisi, the Tisch University Professor in Computer Science and chair of the Department of Computer Science.“ We are proud to count him among our Cornell graduates, whose achievements continue to amplify the department’s legacy of groundbreaking theoretical computer science – a tradition exemplified by his adviser, John Hopcroft.”
