For Keshaav Krishnaa Pothapur MHA ’25, the journey to the Sloan Master of Health Administration program began in Chennai, India, where he worked as a dentist.

In clinical practice, he witnessed stark disparities in the affordability and accessibility of care—experiences that motivated him to build the skills and leadership training needed to address systemic challenges in health care.

“The Sloan Program has equipped me not only with the tools to tackle these issues but also with the leadership competencies to lead by influence and think with empathy,” Keshaav said.

“I developed these skills not just in the classroom, but also through opportunities like colloquium, the Healthcare Students Association, and @sloanstudentassociation.”

Today, Keshaav works as an administrative manager at Boston Medical Center.

Where does AI bias really begin?

AI systems learn from data, but that data can reflect human biases and the decisions behind it.

Dr. Tasha Austin-Williams, Lecturer at the Cornell Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy, explores where bias in AI can come from and how AI, when used responsibly, can also help us recognize our own biases.

In the full eCornell Keynote, she joins Dr. Thomas O’Toole for a broader conversation about AI bias, ethics, transparency, and trust.

🔺 Brooks Spotlight: Stephen Damianos 🔺
Lecturer, @cornellinwashington

Stephen Damianos is a scholar and practitioner working at the intersection of public policy, ethics, and technology governance.

He is Executive Director of the Neurorights Foundation, where he leads global efforts to harness neurotechnologies for social good and protect against their misuse.

This fall, he is teaching PUBPOL 2830: Ethics and Public Policy at DC Start.

Q: In PUBPOL 2830, what big questions do you hope DC Starters will explore as they think more deeply about ethics and public policy?

A: "Ethics and public policy sounds like it should produce clear answers: here's the right thing to do, here's why. But the most important questions are often the murkiest.

Questions of fairness and distribution: who gets what, and why. Questions of power: how to identify abuses when they hide in ordinary institutions and everyday decisions. Questions of obligation: what we owe each other, ourselves, and people we will never meet whose lives our choices nonetheless shape. These are the questions at the center of my course."

📖 Damianos is also the author of the forthcoming book, Asylum Is Unavailable: Absence and Absurdity at the Digital Border, publishing September 22.

Drawing on his research in Greece, the book examines the Skype-based asylum system used on mainland Greece from 2014 to 2022 and its impact on asylum seekers' access to rights and services.

Analyzing data is one skill. Communicating what it means is another.

In Amstat News, the American Statistical Association’s magazine, researchers make the case that data literacy requires more than technical skills, including the ability to clearly communicate the story behind the numbers.

Data analysis can uncover patterns, identify trends, and provide evidence. But using those insights also requires explaining what the data tells us and translating findings into information policymakers and other decision-makers can use.

📊 Master of Science in Data Science for Public Policy (MS-DSP) 📊

Cornell’s MS in Data Science for Public Policy combines technical data science training with an understanding of policy implications, ethics, and human impact. Students build the critical thinking and communication skills needed to interpret data, communicate evidence, and turn technical analysis into informed public policy decisions.
