Student spotlight: Rose Brown, psychological sciences and human development doctoral candidate

Rose Brown studies organizational justice, seeking to understand how people respond to mistreatment at work and what they believe should happen in response.

"Cornell has provided opportunities to connect with scholars across departments and fields while I develop as both a researcher and an educator," she said. "I also knew Cornell would challenge me intellectually and professionally. Throughout my Ph.D., I have been inspired by colleagues, mentors, and students who are doing remarkable work in and beyond the academy, and it has been a privilege to grow alongside them."

The Graduate School is home to around 5,000 graduate and professional students who are conducting research and scholarship in over 80 fields of study across three campuses and research sites around the globe. Today, doctoral student Julia Sebastien is sharing her research in the field of communication:

Q: What do you study?
A: I study the psychology of playful interactions with immersive technologies like virtual reality. My work focuses on user agency (i.e., our ability to make and enact meaningful choices), exploring how agency operates in virtual contexts and shapes other psychological outcomes of media use.

Q: What are the broader impacts of your research?
A: How people respond to situations, real or virtual, depends on feeling able to make and enact choices. As studying agency in virtual interactions helps illuminate when and how they translate into real life, this work can guide user‑centered technology design to foster humanistic outcomes like empathy, learning, and prosocial behavior.

Q: What excites you about your area of research?
A: Although they're not "real," virtual experiences can feel real on cognitive, emotional, and even neurobiological levels, especially when we play an active role. While there are risks of harms that must be mitigated, I feel inspired to explore and test how thoughtful, human‑centered design can harness these effects for good.
