We hosted a Wine and Cheese reception last night for ORIE Ph.D. students, faculty, and staff. The event was held simultaneously on the Ithaca campus and at Cornell Tech. Each attendee had the opportunity to introduce themself and share an interesting personal tidbit. It turns out there are many runners, football (a.k.a. soccer) fans, and parents in the group. A good time was had by all! There are four photos arranged in a square. All four show some of the attendees at a wine and cheese reception held simultaneously in two Cornell classrooms. In each of the four pictures someone is holding a microphone while the other people in the photos appear to be listening. by @cornellorie

Engineering education research is a rapidly growing field focused on designing effective education systems and learning experiences within engineering. Scholars study how engineers learn, the impacts of educational practices, and how to expand participation in engineering, among other topics. With $25 million from a recent record-setting naming gift from David A. Duffield ’62, MBA ’64, we will establish the Cornell David A. Duffield Engineering Education Research Institute, positioning the college as a leader in the field.

“The last three years have been an exciting time for engineering education research at Cornell. The collaborations within Duffield Engineering and Cornell more broadly have shown how discipline-based education research can create transformative learning experiences for students. We see this new institute as a home for these and new collaborations, a place for scholars, change leaders and educators to come together and work at the forefront of engineering education.”

-- Alexandra Coso Strong, associate professor in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Systems Engineering

The institute will be founded by four Cornell University faculty who work in schools across the college. Alexandra Coso Strong will lead the institute as its inaugural director. Allison Godwin, the Dr. G. Stephen Irwin ’67, ’68 Professor in Engineering Education Research in the R.F. Smith School, will serve as the first associate director. taken in Cornell University by @cornellorie

Duffield Engineering is multifaceted.

“The most spirited place on campus is, without question, Lynah Rink. Attending a Cornell hockey game is a quintessential Cornell experience, and as a member of the Big Red Pep Band, I’ve had the privilege of being at nearly every home and away game of the Cornell teams. Band is the thing that keeps me grounded when life gets stressful. I’m always grateful for the chance to cheer on my school and make music with my friends.

What I never expected was just how many engineers I’d meet in the band. Cornell gives students endless opportunities to explore their interests, and Duffield Engineering reflects that same spirit. It's a place where students are encouraged to branch out and find their niche.

When I first came to Cornell, I had never heard of operations research and information engineering. It wasn’t until I talked with people in the band that I discovered that engineering is broader than the mechanical and electrical paths commonly thought of. With the help of my advisor and a few fellow band members, I found #CornellORIE! It combined my interests in business and engineering.
ㅤ
With a focus on interdisciplinary education, Duffield Engineering excels at creating students who are more than engineers. We are authors, artists, or in my case, musicians. It’s a place where you don’t need to be one thing; you can build an identity that encompasses who you are.”
