Just received this book “Heading Home ~ Growing Up In Baseball “, from my friend @harrysphotographs yesterday, along with another book of 3 children living through and surviving cancer, titled “Fighting Chance”., with an introduction by author Tom Clancy. Harry’s a good guy. Good natured, funny, unpretentious, always traveling, taking photos for clients and for himself. I was particularly fond of this book, covering 6 summers of 8-12 year olds playing baseball in Patterson Park here in Baltimore. With a forward by one of America’s great baseball players, Cal Ripkin, Jr. and an introduction by author Stephen King, I thought I’d share just a few images from his book with you. Let’s Go O’s! #photography #documentaryphotography #harryconnoly #littleleague #baseball (somehow the photos dropped in darker than the images I took on my phone from his book) by @cornelrubino

I posted work from this brilliant, silly, affectionate artist about 5 years ago and just this morning these drawings resurfaced. Culled from some hundreds of drawings created, with many gifted to us by the artist, Anthony Milella, over a 12 year stay in and out of the locked ward of NY’s now closed, draconian, Pilgrim State Psychiatric Hospital.

Milella suffered from dissociation and was bi-polar but misdiagnosed for years and was given antipsychotic drugs such as Stelazine and Thorazine for over 20 years which led to a fatal heart attack at 50. Institutionalized for stabbing his father, (not seriously), he was my best friend and the affection we had for him was unbounding. We met at Parsons, went to Italy to study together and he was the best man at our wedding.

Beyond brilliant with a cutting wit (his favorite author was Anthony Trollope, of all writers), his paintings from our collection have been exhibited at the American Visionary Art Museum and his works caught the fancy and were purchased by Dan Akroyd, Aerosmith, River Phoenix, among many others and hung in House Of Blues around the country. The great fashion designer Anna Sui created a t-shirt line highlighting his work. There’s little out there on him. Almost nothing. So I thought I’d show you a few. Mostly self portraits done in locked wards at Pilgrim State, where lights are on 24 hours. You see him reaching to turn the bulb off. You can also see his search for the Eye of God, staring into porcelain sink drains.

Going through an old file of ephemera, I found the preliminary and only sketch which led to this painting of a family in a small boat on the water during a beach holiday on the Italian island of Ischia, where my family hails from.
The painting is 5X7ft, oil on wood. Scroll to see the pencil sketch. #summer #oilpainting #sketch #drawing #cornelrubinoart ©️cornelrubino by @cornelrubino

3, to me, is a magic number, so I’m posting a third video of Bryan Ferry and the late 70s / early 80s mix of the band Roxy Music performing “More Than This” from 1982.
When I don’t overlay a song by Nino Rota from early Fellini films, or the Japanese composer Jun Miyake, I’ll often overlay the song “Tara”, from the last Roxy Music album, Avalon, to accompany a post or reel but despite it being a hauntingly beautiful instrumental, right now, it’s all about Ferry singing the opening song from Avalon that I care about.

One more song, always in my head, sung by Bryan Ferry. Written by the forever brilliant John Lennon but, for me, immortalized by Ferry. He sang this the last time we saw him in concert and it could very well be the greatest interpretation of a love song. Ever.

It’s been a “few” years since we last saw Bryan Ferry at the Strathmore. Roxy Music and Ferry have been a part of our lives, with songs that spoke to a particular part of us. From Avalon to Ferry’s version of Jealous Guy, it’s still on our playlist. A bit of Don’t Stop The Dance, for those of you too young to know and for those of you lucky enough to have been young when you knew. #bryanferry #roxymusic #music #dontstopthedance #myyouth by @cornelrubino

From 1994, The Mods, shot by David Mcintyre. Unlike the calm, beautifully framed street and landscape scenes on his feed, this post just popped up. Spend time with his work. davidnmcintyre Look for the green spruce profile pic when you look for his name. Cheers. #photography #davidmcintyre #scotland #mods #portraitphotography ©️davidmcintyre by @cornelrubino

A few weeks ago, at PAFA, the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts, I stumbled across this beautiful tempera on masonite from 1958, titled, Woman With Fighting Dogs, by NY artist Jules Kirschenbaum, born in 1930, and who died in 2000 at the age of 70. Thought you’d all enjoy the tender handling of paint and information, regardless of the, off putting for some, subject matter. #painting #tempera #art #artist #juleskirschenbaum by @cornelrubino
