Exploring human experiences in KL, #14

This is @manisandessertclub, our go-to space for those late night dessert cravings.

Founded by Sugania and Prashant, they wanted to create a space that allowed them to share their passion for desserts + felt like a warm home.

Expect warm soothing lighting, constant bursts of laughter around you, and a delicious scent of dessert in the air.

Lately, we've been thinking a lot about the kinds of spaces people choose to return to.

We've spent the past year documenting communities around KL, to feature the stories behind them. More specifically, why these spaces were founded, and their purpose.

Special mention to @weekendartist.club, the community which is featured in the first few slides. It's a space where artists and creative souls come together, to experiment and connect.

When capturing their event, we had the privilege of joining their reflection session, where they simply walk around in silence, to absorb and observe their surroundings.

A moment of silent thought, mirroring the reflection that prompted us to contemplate about the concept of 3rd spaces, and create this post.

"Social environments separate from the two usual environments of home and the workplace"

With the increasing number of events in KL, how do you decide what to do that weekend?

More shared interests, less small talk

Here are 5 communities that we returned to with our friends (even after our interview haha)

This is @kongsikl, an independent arts space built by artists, for artists.

Hidden amongst the industrial warehouses of Kuala Lumpur, Kongsi KL has become home to rehearsals, performances, workshops, and countless creative experiments. A raw warehouse transformed through the collective effort of local artists, each contributing what they could to bring the space to life.

True to its name, Kongsi KL exists to be shared—a place where artists can explore new ideas, collaborate, and create without having to compromise who they’re creating for.

This is @hello.ernies , a space founded by Ern. She is an artist who believes that art was meant to be experienced together.

Through Ernie’s, she curates art workshops, pop-ups, and creative gatherings that feel less like classes, and more like spaces where strangers become friends.

For Ern, it was never just about making art. It was about creating moments where people could slow down, reconnect with their creativity, and leave feeling a little more human than when they arrived.

Most stages weren’t built with disabled performers in mind, so they built their own.

Teater Untuk Semua is a theatre collective creating a space where accessibility isn’t treated as an extra feature.

Here, disabled artists take centre stage, where their artistry and lived experiences are celebrated side by side.

This is Gig For Good, a live music community helping young musicians find their own stage.

Created by Music Mayhem, what started as a passion for music gradually became a way to support young people struggling with confidence and connection after COVID.

Through jam sessions, mentorship, and live performances, aspiring musicians are given the opportunity to grow, perform, and experience what it feels like to be a rockstar.

To create even more opportunities for the next generation, Gig For Good will be organizing a three day music festival from 24th - 26th July.

This is @findinghylas , a kombucha brand founded by two Malaysian brothers who believe that improving your health shouldn’t always feel clinical or overwhelming.

I first met Justin when I booked him for a physio session (he was an amazing physiotherapist haha). After the session, he offered me some of his homemade kombucha and shared his vision of helping others through alternative approaches to wellbeing, together with his brother.

After years of hearing people around them struggle with issues like bloating, inflammation, skin flare-ups, and low energy, the two of them started wondering if there was a more natural way to support people’s wellbeing.

What started as experiments in their parents’ kitchen slowly evolved into a kombucha subscription tailored to each individual’s health concerns. Every two weeks, customers receive a different bottle designed around what their body might need most at that moment (and yes, the flavours change too!!).

For them, Finding Hylas wasn’t created to be a quick trend or money grab. They wanted to create something thoughtful that could quietly help people feel a little better in their everyday lives.

If you want to try funky and delicious kombucha that’s been made for YOU, check out their page!!

This is KL Swing, a community of Lindy Hop lovers bringing people together through music, movement, and a shared love for a dance style deeply rooted in history.

What started as dance classes slowly became something much more human. A space where people from all walks of life — from introverts and complete beginners to elderly couples and parents with children — come together simply to have fun, connect, and let loose for the night.

For them, KL Swing is about rediscovering joy, embracing imperfection, and remembering what it feels like to fully be in the moment again.

This is @offthetrack.wav, a group of independent musicians, and most importantly, a group that believes artists should be able to create on their own terms.

They organise shows across different spaces — from art studios to skateparks — each one shaped around the artist performing. With a focus on giving musicians full creative freedom, these shows allow them to experiment, perform, and share their work without having to compromise for the industry.

To OTT, it’s about creating a space where artists feel understood, and where others are reminded that it’s possible to do things differently.

This is Maybelline, founder of @groovesociety.my — and someone who just wanted a space where people could dance without overthinking it.

It’s not really a dance class, not really a party either. Somewhere in between.

People come in not knowing each other, switch partners halfway through, and by the end, you’re dancing with strangers like you’ve known them for years.

There are no mirrors, and no pressure to get the steps right. It’s just music, movement, and a room full of people connecting through dance.

This is Lisa, Myra and Imen, founders of @friendswhochess, and simple chess lovers who believe that there’s a seat for everyone in the game.

Some of their fondest memories of chess came from playing with their families, where starting a game simply meant spending time together.

Today, they organise casual chess meet-ups that bring that same feeling back — spaces where people can slow down, play at their own pace, and enjoy the game without pressure.

If this is a space for you, make sure to join their upcoming event on 3 May!

This is @sayurinthecity , an urban farm by @eatsshootsandroots ! 🥬 It is a space built by people who believe nature should be accessible to everyone.

What started as a small backyard in 2012 has grown into a thriving garden in the heart of KL. Through years of trial and error, it slowly evolved into a space where people can reconnect with where their food comes from.

More than just a garden, it’s a community where people choose to show up and play their part in understanding the environment better. It’s also a testament to what a community can achieve when people come together.
