Luke Griffith was born on 27 December 2000 and started jiu jitsu in 2006, at five years old. His father, a purple belt at the time, taught him and his sister in a little home gym. He later trained under Bobby Karagiannidis, who awarded his purple belt.

He did not always like it. In his own words, he and his sister went through stages of liking and disliking the sport over the years. It was not until he was fifteen or sixteen that he really started to enjoy it. His first competition outside South Africa was an ADCC trials. He had no idea what to expect. He failed. He came back a year later and failed again.

Then he won it as a purple belt. In May 2022 he won the European, Middle Eastern and African Trials, four matches and three submissions, including a heel hook on Kristof Szucs and a rear naked choke on Dawid Drobina in the semifinal. He was the only African winner of the entire tournament.

He moved from Johannesburg to Austin to train full time under John Danaher at New Wave. He won a second ADCC Trials gold in Warsaw in 2023, took brown belt double gold at the IBJJF European No Gi Championship, and won No Gi Worlds and Pans at brown belt in both his weight class and the absolute.

At the 2024 ADCC World Championship he moved up to plus 99kg and took silver, submitting three of his opponents along the way, before losing the final to Felipe Pena by rear naked choke.

In April 2025 Danaher promoted him to black belt, days after he beat Victor Hugo in the co main event of WNO 27. In December he beat Felipe Pena by rear naked choke at WNO 31 to become the Who’s Number One heavyweight champion, taking the belt Gordon Ryan had vacated. He is 25, and he goes at 99kg in Krakow in September.
