POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
If you’re like most waterfowl hunters, you’ve pictured it. Your dog leaps off the tailgate at first light. It stays steady as a rock while the flock circles. Then it charges through the marsh for a perfect retrieve.

No whining, no breaking, just pure teamwork that makes every hunt better.

That vision is why many people start looking for real answers. They want to find the best duck dog program to train a waterfowl dog.

The truth is, most hunters hit the same wall. They try old-school force methods or whatever random drills they find online, only to end up with a dog that’s either burned out, injured, or just going through the motions. Sound familiar? You’re not alone—and there’s a better way.

At Cornerstone Gundog Academy, we’ve helped thousands of hunters avoid that frustration. We do this by giving them a clear, proven path. You’ve waited for this. You finally brought home that energetic Labrador Retriever puppy—the one you pictured fetching birds in the blind, bonding with your family, and becoming the reliable hunting partner you always wanted.

But reality hits hard. Your high-drive, headstrong Lab ignores commands. Force Fetch falls apart. Training sessions end in mutual frustration. Your perfectionist tendencies clash with your dog’s personality, and instead of the joyful partnership you envisioned, you’re left wondering if you’re failing your dog—or if the dog just “won’t make it.”

Sound familiar? You’re not alone. Many aspiring gundog owners face this exact pain.

Without a proven system, owners often:
👉Jump between random YouTube videos and conflicting advice
👉Push too hard, creating confusion and shutdown in the dog
👉Feel isolated, comparing their “behind-the-scenes” struggles to others’ highlight reels

Cornerstone Gundog Academy solves this with a comprehensive, online step-by-step retriever training program designed specifically for hunters and busy families. It covers everything from puppy basics to advanced hunting retrieves in clear, progressive modules.

Don’t believe us? Head over to cornerstongundogacademy.com and sign up for a free preview to see exactly how easy our step by step training program is to follow. by @cornerstonegundogs

A huge win for CGA member, Zach Kerns-

“I’ve never been so happy to only kill 6 little doves!

I was nervous about doves being Tillers first live hunt. They can be a tough bird even for experienced dogs, being so small to mark and all the pin feathers they have.

But Tiller hit the dove field like he had been hunting for years!

Quite, steady as a rock, marking like a machine, straight out straight back, delivering to hand even with cripples!

All the “silly” mock hunts in the yard and random fields with blinds, decoys and frozen birds paid off big time.

To him I think it was just another day but after those first couple birds he was all business! He didnt even want to be pet or to be touched as he was to busy watching the sky or waiting for me to move my gun!”

Absolutely crushing it, keep up the hard work Zach! by @cornerstonegundogs

If you’ve spent any time around retriever training, you’ve probably heard about a “blind retrieve.” But what exactly does that mean?

What is a Blind Retrieve?

A blind retrieve refers to a scenario where your dog retrieves a bird or bumper it hasn’t seen fall. In other words, the dog is “blind” to the exact location of the downed item and must rely on you to guide it.

At the heart of a successful blind retrieve is trust—trust that’s developed over months of consistent training and bonding.

To excel in blind retrieves, your retriever needs three key qualities:

1) Trust between you and your dog
2) Confidence in taking the correct line
3) A strong relationship built through consistent training

These traits take time to develop, but with patience and perseverance, they will become the cornerstone of your retriever’s performance.

Fortunately, our online courses are specifically designed to integrate these principles into your daily training routine. With time, hard work, and diligence, you’ll see your retriever thrive.

Can starting steadiness too early kill my young pups retrieving drive? To answer this question, we think it is important to shift the mindset on what steadiness is. It isn’t something that only exists in retrieving- steadiness is a lifestyle that exists in every aspect of every day life for your dog. From sitting patiently as you pour food into their food bowl to sitting on place while you mow the lawn- the possibilities to weave steadiness into the every day is endless.

So instead of focusing on steadiness while retrieving with a young pup, focus on incorporating steadiness into their everyday life (and sprinkle a few fun bumpers in there too). by @cornerstonegundogs

CGA Member, Terrance Carr, took the time to leave a review for our courses that made us incredibly proud.

Terrance said “The underdog and the starter, never the finisher. Barely graduated high school. Tried, and failed, training my first lab. 2 years ago everyone, including my wife and daughter and everyone who knew me said no way no how. Well, today I am here to tell you, if I can train my own dog through Cornerstone you absolutely can.

There will be struggles, but the victories are that much sweeter. The support from Cornerstone is like no other. Believe in yourself and join us!”

Keep up the incredible work Terrance! by @cornerstonegundogs

If you’ve ever watched your puppy or young dog struggle with the basics and thought, “Is this dog ever going to turn out?” — you’re not alone.

Kevin Wright felt the exact same way. Early in training, things felt chaotic. Progress was inconsistent. Frustration mounted. At times it genuinely felt like a “train wreck.”

Fast forward to Mabel’s second full hunting season: 173 successful retrieves under her belt. Blinds. River work. Multiples. Tough birds. A dog that had become steady, capable, and a true hunting partner.

How did they get there?

Through patience, community support, and — most importantly — a clear, step-by-step training plan that removed the guesswork. Kevin followed Cornerstone Gundog Academy’s 52 Plus program from the very beginning.

This is the story of what’s possible when you stop guessing and start following a proven retriever training system built for the DIYer. by @cornerstonegundogs
