🖤 #HumansOfDTLV: Before DTLV became what it is today, Juan Caro aka @thejohnnyrox was lugging demos around the city trying to convince people to take a chance on music nobody else was playing.

When he moved here from Southern California in 2002, the Strip was dominated by house and big-room sounds. Johnny’s heart was elsewhere: goth, new wave, post-punk, electro-clash — the soundtrack of misfits, outsiders and alt kids who didn’t always have a place to gather in Las Vegas.

So he built one.

Alongside friends @sanchezozzie, @jrdnchls and @ryanpardey, Johnny helped spark a movement that would become Rawkerz.

What started in long-gone venues like Sasha’s and Cooler Lounge eventually found a home in DTLV at Beauty Bar, Griffin, Artifice and Bunkhouse, becoming a defining force that helped shape the identity of a neighborhood that was still finding itself.

“We just played the music we grew up on,” Johnny says.

It took time to build the scene, but once it took off, the same guy who arrived in Vegas without knowing anyone was bringing legends like Marky Ramone, Peter Hook of Joy Division and New Order, Andy Rourke of The Smiths, and Boz Boorer of Morrisey to DTLV.

“Everybody I was watching on MTV, I’m picking them up from the airport and they’re my guest DJ,” Johnny says.

More than two decades later, people still show up for Johnny.

Today, he can be found spinning dark wave, new wave, indie and post-punk during his Friday and Saturday night residencies at @cornishpastycolv and at @dobermandtlv — where he debuts his Dark Waves night this Thursday — introducing new audiences to the music that helped define a generation of DTLV nightlife.

For Johnny, it’s never been about chasing trends. It’s about building community and giving people a place where they feel like they belong.

If you ask what keeps him going after 30-plus years behind the decks, the answer is simple:

“People telling me they’ve never heard that song played anywhere else.”
