Perfection, in the Wrong Direction 🇲🇾

12-13 September, Sepang. D1GP Malaysia x NDS GP 2026 turned the Driving Experience Centre into a place where the goal was to be as precise as possible while pointing the car the wrong way.

Drift began on Japanese mountain roads and now has a Grand Prix of its own. Around 28 entries, Malaysian and Indonesian teams side by side, and a grid with names like Mike Motormaniac and Mr Batu. Two cars, one leading and one chasing, judged on line, angle, speed and style.

The smell of burnt rubber hit before the cars even came into view.

A 1937 Packard, gilded in protest.

Shepard Fairey — the artist behind the OBEY campaign — is unveiling Filthy Lucre Ain't Nothing New, a collaboration with Cart Department centered on a single object: a 1937 Packard Touring Sedan, reworked entirely in intricate gold.

One side of the car carries lyrics from hip-hop figures like Slick Rick, Chuck D, and The Notorious B.I.G., celebrating wealth. The other pulls from punk voices — Joe Strummer, Jello Biafra, Jamie Reid — critiquing it. Two subcultures, one chassis, arguing with each other in gold leaf.

It's less restoration than statement: the vintage car reframed as canvas, luxury symbol turned social commentary.
On view September 24–27 at 16 Morton St, New York. Opening night (Sept 24) brings a DJ set and an artist talk with Fairey himself.

5th Annual Motormaniac Festival 2026

Two days on the rooftop of MyTown — hazy skies over KL did nothing to keep the crowd away. Cosmopol Grid was there for the fifth run of @motormaniac.co annual festival, and the rooftop covered the full spread of where Malaysian car culture stands today.

JDM legends were out in force: Skyline GT-Rs across the R32, R33 and R34 generations, Silvias, an RX7 FD3s, a Savannah, Supras from the MK4 and MK5 eras, a Liberty Walk Datsun 240Z from Retro Havoc, and the iconic Datsun 510.

Continental royalty made an appearance too — a 993, a GT3 RS, and a two-door Fiat 131 few at the show had ever seen in person. Ferraris were also on the rooftop, and courtesy of Naza, a McLaren Senna drew the kind of crowd only a Senna can.

New-generation Mini Coopers held their own alongside all of it, a reminder that the badge is still very much alive, not just a nostalgia act.

But the real statement was local: Wiras and Satrias running Evo internals, a legendary rally Wira among them, and Myvis and Axias pushed to genuinely extreme builds. Proof this scene builds its own icons, not just imports them.

Workshops like @nurrmotors and @teraju_auto were on the ground representing the craft behind it all — and faces from the community, including Faris Azri of Choii Motorsport, Uncle Shah, and Aulia Rahman of Galeri Kereta, kept the energy moving.

Organised by Bateriku.com. Five years in, and still the clearest snapshot of where this culture is headed.

On the wrist, at the wheel.

There's a particular kind of car enthusiast who understands that the dashboard and the wrist should speak the same language. Five timepieces that prove the point

1/ Citizen Ana-Digi x Honda Prelude — a reissue borrowing its analogue-digital face straight from the '80s dash, for those who remember when Honda's coupé was the benchmark.

5/ Grand Seiko x Nissan GT-R — a Spring Drive chronograph finished in Bayside Blue, built to mark the GT-R's 50th anniversary. Where the rest of this list plays with nostalgia, this one plays with precision — full-blooded haute horlogerie wearing a racing livery.

Five watches, one instinct: build machines you can carry with you, even after you've switched off the engine.

Some of the best moments at Retro Havoc 2026 came from simply standing still and taking it all in.

A Hakosuka parked beside a younger GT-R. RX-7s equipped with VeilSide kit. Skylines carrying the spirit of Top Secret. Silvias reimagined through Pandem and Liberty Walk. Nearby, a Toyota AE86 Trueno, sat proudly alongside a Kaido Racer-inspired Nissan Laurel and a timeless Datsun 510. Different eras, different philosophies, all sharing the same space.

These cars aren't just modified machines. They're memories, inspirations, and pieces of a culture that has travelled far beyond Japan. For many enthusiasts, seeing them in person still feels special—no matter how many times they've appeared on posters, magazines, VHS tapes, magazines, or screens.

Retro Havoc reminded us that great car culture isn't only about rarity or horsepower. It's about the stories people attach to these machines, and the feeling they create when they come together in one place. 🇯🇵🏁

There couldn't have been a better venue for Progressive Drivers Meet than A&W PJ.
Since 1965, Malaysia's first drive-in restaurant has been a gathering place for generations of motorists, long before "car meets" became a thing.

Last Friday night, that spirit returned as enthusiasts filled the iconic lot with conversations, good food, great machines, and a shared passion for car culture.

Rain-soaked tarmac, mist hanging in the air, basslines shaking the paddock, and rows of slammed showcars glowing under the night lights.

Last night at APDCrew Circuit felt bigger than just drifting. Beyond the tire smoke and limiter bouncing through the wet air, the night was filled with Hot Wheels collectors, Mini GT hunters, local merch pop-ups, and crowds moving from booth to booth like a rolling night market for car culture.

A gathering where drift cars, diecast shelves, air suspension builds, loud audio systems, and midnight conversations all existed in the same space.

A reminder that car culture has never only been about speed — sometimes, it’s about the atmosphere, the people, and the feeling of the night itself. 🏁🌧️💨
