All my love to @costumersofcolor for another incredible 18th century salon!!!

I’m so thrilled to see this event grow, to see more and more people join our community, to feel safe trying something new, whether that’s new costumers, new to historical, any of it!! I love that people feel comfortable to be themselves with us, to come and learn and play dress up in a safe and respectful and joyful environment

Gigi has really done such an incredible thing for the historical community by creating this organization and hosting these events where BIPOC and gender non conforming and disabled costumers feel safe and welcome to venture into a space that can be pretty intimidating to join if you don’t fit the mold

I’ve been doing fewer and fewer events as I adjust to the limits my body sets for me, but Costumers of Color events will always be a high priority for me because I just love the space that we’ve made with each other

Shoutout to @pearlhourglass @sionnach.studios @soulaani.seamstress @notyourmommashistory for the awesome programming during the symposium, @girl_with_the_blue_hair for the beautiful photography, @cosmic.reys.cosplay for the videography, and @once_upon_a_stitch @sweetheart_cosplays and @princeofsnarkcosplay for being the best roomies!! by @costumersofcolor

So for this years @costumersofcolor 18th century Symposium and Ball, I decided 23 days ago I would switch it up and make a robe à la française. It was a lot of fabric, lots of sewing, but in the end I am ecstatic with the results #rococodress #sewing #historicalcostuming #robealafrançaise #costumersofcolor by @costumersofcolor

I will never forget the first time I held a calligraphed and illuminated scroll from the 16th century.

I was in Ferrara, my favorite city in Italy (where my cugina Irene lives and invited me to be an honorary family member), spending an afternoon at the Archivio Storico Comunale. The archivist, Dott.ssa Corinna Mezzetti, sat me down for espresso first, the way you do when something important is coming. Then she wheeled in a cart with a box on it.

Inside that box was a document from 1521 conferring Ferrarese citizenship to a person originally from Modena. Someone who, five hundred years ago, needed to belong somewhere and was told yes.

Holding it was not a light feeling. It was heavy. Weighty. Full. Like cupping what remains of a person’s existence in your small hands and understanding, in your body rather than just your mind, that they were real. That they mattered. That this piece of paper was someone’s whole relief.

This is why I do the work I do. History is not abstract. It lives in boxes, in archives, in the careful hands of people like Corinna Mezzetti who know what they are keeping.
Thank you, Dott.ssa Corinna Mezzetti. I will carry this day for a long time.

Join us in Seattle on October 3, 2026, for the 18th Century Historical Symposium and Rococo Salon (Georgians welcome!).

We are honored to feature keynote speaker Cheyney McKnight of @NotYourMommasHistory

She connects past and present events through storytelling, reproductions, cultural costume, and primary sources. McKnight runs the Not Your Momma’s History YouTube channel which has over 250,000 subscribers and 9 million views, and shows the day to day lives of Black people throughout American history. She also operates the Let’s Talk About Slavery table in parks, historical sites, and public events across America. The table is a safe place for people to learn and talk about the history of chattel slavery in this country. The title of her lecture is: Afroterpreting: Interpreting History While Black.

Our symposium also features an expert costuming panel including:

In March 2027, six travelers are coming with us to Italy for eight days of wine, history, and the kind of meals that make you never want to leave. Chianti Classico in Castellina, Brunello in Montalcino, Lambrusco near Modena, Prosecco in the Veneto with the story of each place woven into every glass.

By the Glass is a small-group wine journey designed for curious travelers who want to understand what they’re tasting and where it comes from. Led by social scientist and public historian Gigi Coulson and wine educator Dr. Chelsea Stephens.

Italy 2027 has one spot remaining. If you’ve been thinking about it, now is the time.

Link in bio.
Fill out the interest form and we’ll set up a chat.
