Most gardening advice is written for gardens.
This is for the rest of us.

Seven years ago I assumed many of these plants wouldn’t do well in pots. Some wouldn’t flower. Some wouldn’t fruit. Some would eventually outgrow the balcony. Today, one of them is over 7 feet tall. Another fruits every season. And the most fragrant plant in our home lives in a container.
They care about sunlight, drainage, consistency. Everything else is just problem-solving.

Which of these would you grow in your balcony?

This tiny kitchen took me 7 months.
No renovation. No contractor. Barely a budget.

Our first home had this kitchen. Tiny, tired, and entirely mine to figure out. Just paint, some stubbornness, and Phoebe underfoot the whole time.

It didn’t really get any bigger, but it did start working and looking better 💛 taken in Gurgaon, Haryana by @cosyquirk

While my core aesthetic is vintage, not all pieces are from the year of the “yore” (any F.R.I.E.N.D.S fans here?)
Which is why I absolutely love finding functional decor pieces that look and feel timeless, and nothing can beat my two favorites - wood, and brass to achieve that look.

These stunning pieces are a find and a half from @homelikethat #collaboration and right in time for festive shopping - sturdy enough for everyday use, fit right in as if they’ve always belonged, and classic enough to be passed on as heirlooms.

I honestly can’t pick a favourite, which one is yours though?

Our last home got no direct sunlight. While that definitely ensured the house was always cosy, it also meant our options were very limited when it came to plants.

Every time I got tempted to pick up a large flowering plant for our balcony, I instinctively knew it wouldn’t survive the month. So over 6 years, I lost quite a few of our green soldiers until I made peace with the low light conditions and made friends with these 7 plants.

Now word of caution. Low light does not mean no light.

Every plant needs sunlight in some measure to grow. So while these may survive in lower-light indoor conditions, they’ll thrive when they’re periodically exposed to some light, preferably natural, but grow lights work too.

A key secret to my healthy indoor plants has always been placing them somewhere with some air circulation, without a direct draft, and rotating them into the brightest areas of the balcony or house once a week so they get their necessary Vitamin Sun.

Have plants you don’t know if they’ll survive in low light indoors? Drop them in the comments and let’s discuss.

I love when something is new, but doesn’t look like it’s trying to be 🤎

This @obsessionsindia carpet is the newest addition to our TV and music corner, yet feels like it has always belonged here. Traditional in its detailing it may be, but also completely at ease in a more contemporary setting, just like Ella Fitzgerald and her music.

Maybe that’s my favourite kind of timeless: not old, not new, just good enough to belong anywhere and anytime.

I always wanted a garden. We just happened to live in an apartment.
So our balcony had to work double time :)

Flowers come and go, fruit appears, plants get moved around, and the colours are completely different every three months. I think that’s what I love most about having a garden on a balcony - much like the rest of our house, our balcony is always a WIP; different scenery with every season 🧡💚 taken in Gurgaon, Haryana by @cosyquirk

I love finding ways to keep plants around the house that are easy to move around (for their weekly sun and water routine), are not permanent (less repotting required), and can do better than the boring pot and tray situation!

1. Round copper pot @nilkamalhomes
2. Crackled glass vase @ellementryhome
3. An old discarded lamp shade from my school days 😁
4. Galvanised set of canisters @amazonhomeindia
5. Basket @altrove.in

Which idea was your favourite?

3 years ago when we moved into this old, fully furnished apartment, we weren’t ready for it and it wasn’t ready for us.

We practically had to renovate every room and nook of this house - all the electricals, plumbing, fittings, bathrooms and drains had to be gutted up. Kitchen floors had to be replaced, balcony doors had to be upgraded, new sheds had to be added, main door was destroyed by the projects team we had to eventually fire… the list goes on and it’s long one, while the process was a very tiring one.

After 4 months of full renovation (it was kind of a house swap where we either had to swap the pieces here with our furniture or find ways to integrate them into our home and design sensibilities), we decided to move in and oversee the finishing end ourselves, since we had to let go of our contractor (who basically fleeced us) - as they say, you lose some and you learn from some. And learn, we did.

And while I absolutely loved inheriting some of the older pieces of furniture here, this journey was not as romantic as it may seem to be. Which is why we decided to slow design our home from there on. Instead of letting the renovations take over our entire lives, we learn to live through it, at least for the first year or so, and slowly but certainly redesign this space without letting it overwhelm us.

The living and dining area seen here is possibly the space that underwent the largest transformation - there is plenty of new and yet it still feels lived in. So here’s a little recap of the makeover of our living area, because it’s always nice to look back at how far we have come, so the way ahead doesn’t seem as daunting. Perhaps even exciting? ☺️

It rained for two days straight, and thankfully, we haven’t complained yet, even when our travel plans got completely washed out.
So we did everything else we love instead.

- Boys baked a pound cake with a new recipe, Kai mostly covered in flour, but a valuable contributor nonetheless.
- Baby spider cuttings finally repotted into an old bucket planter on the balcony sill.
- New sleeves for old LPs, and a few lost albums rediscovered along the way.
- An afternoon snooze that ran long, especially for Phoebe.
- Lilies blooming bold in a colour I don’t usually pick.
- Two gorgeous sunsets, and one very golden, rain-drenched living room.

The sun only showed up for a few minutes all weekend. That was plenty.
