It’s one of those moments that makes you pause and take it all in. With no big London studio, no large team, no nanny, no husband, no safety net behind the scenes, just a small, brilliant group of people who care deeply about what we do, and work really hard to make it happen.

I pick my son up from school every day, take him to football most evenings, and have built a studio that works around the life that matters most to me. I think it’s important to say there isn’t only one route into this industry. You can live where you want to live and build something meaningful from very little, in your own way, at your own pace, on your own terms.

‘Houses tell you what they want if you are willing to listen,’ says Sophie Rowell, founder of Côte de Folk. ‘I felt it was too strongly rooted in its own sense of self to warrant anything other than peacefulness,’ she explains of this Victorian house in Hackney, which she has imbued with renewed energy alongside Chantal Michelin of Flower Michelin Architects. With much to consider structurally - extending upwards and reconfiguring the footprint for modern life - the duo have transformed a ramshackle house, once frozen in time, into an elegant family home. ‘It has a really amazing feeling,’ says Sophie. ‘It is so elegant in its proportions, exterior and light, but also so solid and strong.’ A largely neutral palette underpins the scheme, enlivened by a considered use of pattern and colour in just the right places. For our latest project we wanted to turn the entrance into something that felt intentional, warm, graphic and full of character.
Rich timber floors, soft light, a sculptural console and layers of reflection create a space that feels inviting from the moment you walk through the door. Proof that even the in-between spaces deserve attention.
All these images were shot by @boz_gagovski who was amazing to collaborate with to bring out the richness and depth of this project. Thanks Boz!

Next door to the bedroom, a dressing room to complete the top floor suite.
A space for sleeping, dressing and, most importantly, escaping.
Floor-to-ceiling silk curtains soften the space and conceal everything away, leaving only a few treasured pieces in view.
Underfoot, a deep-pile olive green carpet adds softness and depth throughout making the whole space feel cocooning and wonderfully removed from the everyday.

Our latest project saw us persuade our client to take over the entire top floor for sleeping and dressing and what a transformation it’s been.

We created a bespoke built-in super king bed with generous storage, alongside a dedicated desk for working from home. The whole scheme is beautifully wrapped in sumptuous shantung silk, creating a space that feels both cocooning and considered.

A bedroom designed to make the most of every inch, without compromising on individuality.

From Fashion Editor to Interior Designer: Sophie Rowell on Reinvention, Renovation and Côte de Folk

After 24 years in fashion, Sophie changed direction and built Côte de Folk @cotedefolk from scratch, eventually earning recognition from House and Garden.

She also shares why renovation budgets need contingency, why she avoids photorealistic AI renders, and how trust creates space for original design.
