Changing the way fashion is farmed. One story, one project, one person at a time.
(Farmers first ✊🏿✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏻)

POSTS STORIES REELS

#Cotton is rarely traceable to a single pair of hands. Harvests may be aggregated and processed together long before the fibre becomes a T-shirt, pair of jeans, or bedsheet.

The idea of knowing the exact farmer behind a garment can sound intimate and reassuring, but cotton supply chains do not always work that way, and forcing them into that narrative can flatten reality. It can turn farmers into marketing devices, or reduce complex communities into a few names and faces chosen to stand in for an entire region.

So if connecting one garment to one farmer doesn’t necessarily reflect the reality of cotton production, why are we still encouraging you to meet farmers and hear their stories?

Simply because data cannot tell you everything. Farmers bring context that #traceability systems cannot capture on their own. They can speak to the pressures, trade-offs, local realities, and definitions of progress that shape what cotton production actually looks like on the ground. That knowledge comes from relationships with farmers, cooperatives, ginners, and local organisations who can tell you what a season actually looked like. Not as a story, as intelligence.

Good traceability should help us see the system more clearly, not be reduced to a country level nor to a neat story about one farmer and one field.

Our fourth #WhoMadeMyCotton report explores this idea in much more depth. Read the full report through the link in bio. by @cottondiaries

#WhoMadeMyCotton Step 4: The Farmer’s Ecosystem is out! #worldcottonday

For years we’ve been travelling through #cotton fields all around the world 🌍, meeting local traders, ginners, farmers, and the many people from the organisations farmers work with, to get to the roots of cotton traceability (literally).

What we learnt radically shifted our perspective on traceability, and we want to hear from you, whether it resonates or not.

Who grows cotton, and who turns it into fibre? 🌿 Who sells what to whom? What challenges do they face? And how do we, as fashion and textile professionals, move beyond broad-stroke supply chain mapping to something we call ‘relational traceability’? 🚜

New regulation is pushing brands to look harder at their supply chains, and traceability platforms are multiplying to meet it. They matter. But they work through data, and data can’t tell you what’s happening in the places behind the records.

There’s another #traceability technology, older and arguably more powerful: relationships. Repeated contact, long-term commitment, genuine knowledge of the people and places you work with.

It’s what we call *relational traceability*, and after five years following #cotton through denim supply chains👖back to the farm for our #WhoMadeMyCotton report "Step 4: The Farmer's Ecosystem", we think it’s where the industry’s next shift is.

Your cotton can contribute to greater food sovereignty for farmers. 👩🏻‍🌾

In many countries, growing cotton with regenerative, organic, and agroecological approaches nourishes soil and people. As it should.

Based on La Via Campesina’s definition of food sovereignty, the framework “puts the aspirations and needs of those who produce, distribute and consume food at the heart of food systems and policies, rather than the demands of markets and corporations.”

When cash crops and food crops are grown side by side, farmers can feed their families and diversify income sources. Often when prices are stable, cotton even becomes a safe haven of savings and investment, allowing farmers to build sustenance. 🌿☘️

Above all, it means health comes first. Farmers are not forced to rely on chemicals and pesticides. In fact, when given the power to decide, farmers often don’t want to resort to it at all.

In Cotton at the Source, a collaboration between Cotton Diaries and @agrowingculture released in 2023, you can explore the connection between cotton, clothing and food. Read the stories and local lessons from farmers, cooperatives and movements in Benin, Brazil and India who are reclaiming food sovereignty in cotton-growing regions.

Five years ago, we asked a simple question: who made the cotton in our jeans? 👖

Our denim work met @cottondiaries, and #WhoMadeMyClothes became #WhoMadeMyCotton

We followed cotton back through weaving mills, spinners and traders. This time, we reached the farm.

Some of what we learned came from interviews. Most of it came over tea, in fields, at gins, and in conversations that carried on for years.

Thank you to everyone who let us visit, answered our many questions, and trusted us with what they know.

Certification is usually sold as something that benefits producers. It’s worth asking whether that was ever the design.

Take organic cotton. The knowledge it rests on came from Indian farming traditions, yet Indian farmers are standard-takers, not standard-setters, and often receive lower premiums than organic growers elsewhere. India’s own standard isn’t recognised in most export markets, so farmers certify under foreign rules to sell abroad. The same holds for Turkish and East African growers.

Albert Howard, credited with founding organic farming, said himself he was translating Indian techniques into a language Western science would accept. But once a practice becomes a standard, someone owns the standard. And it’s rarely the people the knowledge came from.

When farmer knowledge is formalised by institutions farmers don’t control, the question isn’t whether the practice is good. It’s who ends up owning the proof.

Chapter 1 of our new series, by Simon Ferrigno, Anne Oudard and Mariana Gatti, traces who wrote the rules and who they were written for. On Substack now 🔗 by @cottondiaries

Certifications can be useful for many things. Farmer justice isn’t one of them.

This is the first chapter in a new series, Who Are Certifications Really For? — by Simon Ferrigno, Anne Oudard and Mariana Gatti.

A certification is a document attesting that cotton was grown to meet a particular standard; verified, audited, stamped. What it isn’t is the farming itself. The practices came first, often centuries first, developed and held by farmers long before anyone thought to call them “organic” or “regenerative.”

So when certification is sold as a system that benefits producers, it’s worth asking the question: was that ever the design? Was it built to reassure the people buying or the people growing?

It’s time to trace who wrote the rules, who owns them, and why that has to be understood before we can talk about standards becoming farmer-centred, or even farmer-designed.

Hey, this is @Anneheartjeans 👋

Last week I was at the Organic Cotton Summit in Türkiye: Listening, learning, sharing, and meeting some of our Cotton Diaries community in person.

What struck me most was the intimacy in the conversations, unusual for the typical conference format. Farmers shared perspectives on panels. Regional discussions with live translation kept production perspectives at the forefront, while the industry listened. And there were sparks of solution and wisdom from every corner.

Next, I want to see farmers not only on the panels, but in the workshops, industry discussions and rooms where the strategies unfold. The first step is having grower perspectives; the next is placing those farmers in dialogue with the commercial conversations.

The theme of this year’s World Environment Day is Climate Action.

Farmers have been adapting to climate change for millennia. The question isn’t whether they have solutions, it’s whether we’re listening.

Long before ‘regenerative’ entered the conference circuit, smallholder farmers were reading the land, saving seeds, and building systems resilient enough to outlast disruptions. The knowledge was always there.

Climate solutions aren’t found in boardrooms or policy papers. They’re alive in the fields.

Next week, our Anne Oudard (@anneheartjeans) travels to Istanbul to lead a workshop on traceability at the Organic Cotton Summit, hosted by @TextileExchange and @OCAccelerator 🌱

Traceability is a much talked-about topic in cotton. Yet conversations tend to default to compliance, data points, and digital passports, while the people whose work is being “traced” sit somewhere off the page.

Anne, who recently authored our policy paper on cotton traceability and digital product passports, will hold space for an honest conversation: what traceable supply chains look like when farmers are centred rather than referenced. She’ll bring reflections from time spent with cotton farmers in Türkiye and India, the tensions, the blind spots, and the openings that emerge when you start from the field rather than the label.

Anne will joined by speakers:

👤Chandrima Chatterjee, Secretary General, Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI)

👤Patrick Strumpf, CEO, @Haelixa

👤Richard Lawson, Director of Sustainability & Policy, 2B Policy

👤Siddhartha Dabhi, Director & Cofounder, Centre for Grower-centric Eco-value Mechanisms (CGEM)

👤Dr. Yousaf Ali , Vice President Special Initiatives on Agriculture, Mahmood Group
