'The Sea Cure' by being baker will be showing as part of Counihan Gallery's Winter Night Screen from tomorrow, 24 July to 5 August.

To get the most out of this stunning season of video works, join the next 'Around the Block' walking tour, with works also on display at Blak Dot, Next Wave and Merri-bek’s Michelle Guglielmo Park.

Where: leaving from Next Wave, 270 Sydney Rd, Brunswick

'The Sea Cure' is a video performance that captures the relentless pursuit of wellness from the perspective of a chronically ill person. It explores themes of isolation, desperation, hope, failure, and the ritualistic nature of perseverance. Using the beach as a stage, the artist draws on historical medical advice that prescribed time by the sea for ailments with no known cause.

What has changed for better or worse? What challenges have endured? What issues still demand attention? What kind of future is being imagined?

This exhibition reflects on the quiet emotions of migration, cultural transition, and memories of places once called home. Through ceramics and paintings, I bring together fragments of childhood that are playful, tender, and slightly surreal. Hybrid fruits, altered objects, shy animals, and small figures gather like soft constellations, holding traces of belonging and displacement.

The exhibition also includes Objects Once Held, a participatory project where visitors are invited to draw or write about something meaningful to them, becoming part of a shared memory with the community.

Do you know someone bringing culture and creativity to Merri-bek? Nominate them for the Arts and Creative Expression Award.

The award includes all artforms – from music and performance to visual arts and creative writing.

Nominees must live in Merri-bek or have made a significant contribution to the community through a project, program or creative activity.

Submit by Monday 24 August.
