He was wearing an ugly navy suit that had a fresh salsa stain near the left lapel and wasn’t completely ironed. I wondered if he thought about that; not ironing it. He was belligerent at the reception and had spilled salsa from the make-your-own taco bar on his jacket. I wondered why W brought him, but then remembered he was in the wedding party. Kind of. I’d wished he’d gotten the suit tailored before the wedding.
The belligerent man popped another one of his weird mini mints that looked like white BB gun pellets into his mouth while dropping countless others and stumbled over to my bookshelf.
“Great books,” he said, waving in their general direction and mentioning nothing in particular.
“Hmm? Thanks,” I said as I sat down.
He told me he could tell a lot about a person based on what they have on their bookshelves, that he instantly knows if someone is cool based on what they’ve read or are reading, that his favorite book is The Catcher in the Rye.
I acted interested, trying to smile, and asked him what my bookshelf said about me. He turned to face me, nodded, and then turned back to the bookshelf.
He never answered my question, but I didn’t really care.
