How many illegal Francoist symbols did you walk past today?

Debería Desaparecer is coming to the Central Exhibition of the Ibero-American Design Biennial #BID26 at Matadero Madrid.

A map of Spain laid on the floor. On each region, a stack of postcards. Each postcard is a Francoist symbol that is still standing in our streets, squares, churches and façades, even though Spain’s Democratic Memory Law makes them illegal and requires their removal.
We are still waiting for the official catalogue of Francoist symbols the government promised. Until it arrives, we keep mapping them ourselves and demanding that they act.

The height of each stack is the data. Together they form a landscape that rises wherever the law is still being ignored. Walking through it, you see (and feel) how much is left to do, and where.

But this map isn’t just for looking. It’s for acting. Take a postcard, learn the story of that illegal symbol and turn it into direct action. Every postcard that leaves the map is a small piece of this landscape starting to disappear.

From November 2nd until January
Matadero Madrid, Ibero-American Design Biennial
Come, take your postcard and help us make what should disappear, disappear.

Can’t make it? The full map and open database are at deberiadesaparecer.com, where you can explore, share and report new symbols.

After Oviedo and Valladolid, Madrid is the next stop.

90 years since the military uprising of 18 July 1936.

The coup did not only bring death and misery. It installed a state of terror, and that terror was built to be seen: names on streets, shields on façades, plaques on public buildings. A symbolic weight designed to be a daily reminder of who held power and what would happen if you forgot it.

That weight is still here. More than 5,000 Francoist symbols remain in Spanish public space.

Law 20/2022 orders their removal. It sets a deadline, and it allows coercive fines of 200 to 1,000 euros, up to ten times over. Most of those symbols are still standing.

These postcards are part of an interactive exhibition developed with @fjpcyl . This is one of 5,000. Each card maps the symbols still present in one municipality, printed directly over the text of the law that should have erased them. The stain covers the article. The back is blank: you fill in the locality, list the symbols, and send it.

Thanks to @mariafuentes_____ for the photographs.

We redesigned the iconic trophy for the Ibero-American Advertising Festival El Sol together with @ro_verdejo removing 28% of its form to mirror the absence women still face in creative direction, where they represent only 28%. This missing part is not just a statistic. It reflects the many moments in which women are overlooked, unheard, or denied the space they deserve. Inequality may not always be visible, but its consequences shape lives, careers, and futures in ways that cannot be ignored.

Produced with 3d printing and finished in white to symbolize an unfinished process, the piece carries a quiet emotional weight. It shows what happens when women are not offered the same possibilities, and how exclusion can leave marks that are as real as any other form of harm. Its incomplete silhouette stands as both a reminder and a gesture of solidarity, acknowledging the work still needed to create spaces where women can lead, thrive, and be recognized without conditions.

For the first time, this symbol was awarded at the 2024 edition. On a date like November 25th, when the world reflects on the many ways women are harmed or limited, this gesture seeks to honor their voices, their absence, and their resilience, bringing visibility to what has been missing for too long.

We are very excited to share!!! That Eduardo, (He of Couple) has been selected as one of the winners of @pacificdatavizchallenge His project sheds light on the urgent need to protect our oceans and the cultures that depend on them. Huge thanks to the jury and the challenge team for making this possible.

Only 23.47% of the Pacific’s marine zones are under official protection, a thin layer guarding some of the most ecologically rich and vulnerable seas on Earth. These waters do not just sustain marine life, they sustain cultures. For many Polynesian communities, the ocean is ancestral: it is identity, food, and belonging.
This data visualization is more than design, it is a call to action. Inspired by the spiral of the conch shell, a symbol in Polynesian tradition used to gather voices and open sacred moments, the piece reminds us of the urgency to protect marine ecosystems.
Its form flows clockwise, from nations with vast marine territories to the smallest. Three rings tell the story:
* Protection of sea space
* Biodiversity of species
* Environmental stress and risk
From coral patterns to generative code, every detail connects back to the sea. The conch is not yet whole, but the vision is clear: to one day fill every layer with blue, a complete circle of protection and balance.

History will judge how we responded to this moment. Let it not be said we stood by in silence while an entire people was being erased.
Among all the horrors unfolding (the bombing of homes, the targeting of hospitals, the killing of children, the forced displacement of entire communities, the starvation of millions, and the blocking of humanitarian aid) freedom of the press is also being crushed.
This visual compares modern wars through the number of journalists killed. Gaza stands alone, far beyond any other. Each dot marks a life lost while trying to tell the truth. The scale is chilling.
We made this to help visualize what is unspeakable. To witness, to remember, to resist.
Our hearts are heavy with grief, anger, and helplessness. This must end.
Raise your voice. Demand a ceasefire. Demand dignity and justice.
Made with @p5xjs DM us if you would like the code.

Did you know that if you leave your car in the sun for 45 minutes, the interior temperature can double? Even if it has been more than two hours, it may have risen by up to 88%.

Getting into your car right away these days can be really dangerous. That's why we've created a guide based on DGT data, where you can significantly lower the interior temperature of your vehicle in 3 steps. We're putting these guides in cars to help drivers and passengers combat high temperatures and avoid heat stroke.

Here's a translation of the steps:

1. Roll down the passenger window and keep the rest of the windows closed.
2. Open and close the driver's door several times.
3. Let the cold air displace the warm air through the circulation.

If anyone wants the guide in pdf, they can send us a DM. At the moment it's only in Spanish.

This guide will be part of a publication called "NEW INSTRUCTIONS". A book that will address the contemporary challenges of humanity through steps or instructions that help us address them and also question them.

#stopgenocide We can’t look away.

The situation in Palestine is unsustainable, from here we only ask for peace and no more deaths.

We know that this conflict is very complex, since for more than 50 years, these territories have been in dispute.

In this visualization, which uses UN data, we want to show the evolution of the Palestinian land and how little by little it has been reduced.

Every person has the right to their territory. 🍉🍉🍉

Now that Christmas is coming and many of the decorative elements in Spanish houses have religious origins, specifically Catholic. We asked ourselves a question about people’s spirituality. Are we more believers? Or less? A study by the INE (National Institute of Statistics) has shown that belief in the Catholic religion is no longer the majority in Spain.

That’s why and together with our talented friend @chinoojournal we made this visualization that at the same time was an ephemeral intervention. In it you can see how the percentage of Catholics is falling in the last 5 years.

In this way we could ask you the same question: What does this data mean? Are we opening ourselves to new beliefs? Is the Catholic religion a worn-out belief? Are we definitely abandoning spirituality as we knew it?

This post is not intended to offend anyone or attack any belief. Just reflect on the spirituality of people on these important dates.

Thanks a million for your incredible photo @chinoojournal and happy holidays to everyone. We hope you enjoy them from the ritual that you like to do the most.

More than 80 years ago, one of our worst chapters in contemporary history began in Spain. A coup, which would lead to a terrible war and a fascist dictatorship that would sow terror for 40 years.

The shadow of this dictatorship is still very present in our streets. Thousands of symbols and emblems remain illegally occupying public and private spaces. For this reason, together with the Jesús Pereda Foundation of the CCOO of Valladolid, we started a project that geolocates all these symbols. All with the purpose of transforming a landscape contrary to memory and that in no way represents the values of a democratic society.

This post is just a small sample of a giant project that we have been developing for several years together with an incredible team. Thanks to all of them for helping us make it happen, this does not end here, we are just beginning.

If you live in Spain and know of a symbol, you can contact us to report it.

70% of the earth is covered by water. A vital element for all life on earth. Today on the day of the oceans, we wanted to reflect on our relationship with the aquatic environment and if we learned anything after the pandemic.

The data is somewhat alarming since 25,000 tons of plastic material from hospitals and medical items were dumped into our oceans as a result of COVID-19.

This mask sankey diagram shows the flow of effluent that was discharged from each continent into their respective seas and oceans.

This is not a critical look at medical supplies, since the masks have saved millions of lives. If not, it is a reflection on our behaviors. And above all, a wake-up call for the proper use and recycling of all the things we produce to avoid future pandemics. And above all, improve our relationship with the planet and its oceans since they give us life.

After creating this visualization we recycle all the masks depositing them in the
plastic waste.

Vota, por favor.

Tomorrow in Spain are regional elections. And voting is one of the tools that citizens have to change things. More abuse by politicians of public goods cannot be tolerated.

"Chorizos" is an infographic that visualizes political corruption in Spain from the year 2000 to 2020. Chorizos = is a way of saying thieves in Spain. Voting is the only way to change things.

Here we leave the translations of the post.
Image 1: Cases of corruption by political parties.
Image 2: Total cases of corruption.
Image 3: Corruption cases by type of crime.
Image 4: Treemap - corruption cases by region.
Image 5: Estimated cost of corruption.

It is estimated that there are 240 millions smokers in the world. In fact, in less than 5 countries around the world it is legal to consume it.

Despite being an ancient plant with hundreds of beneficial properties, its use has been demonized around the world and throughout history.

This visualization shows the history of the laws that exist on legalization and its prohibition in the last 40 years 1960-2020. We use a plant as a way of visualizing to show something that has always been on our planet and the relationship we have had with it.

Are you for or against its legalization? happy 420!!
