Today is my dad’s funeral.

He passed away earlier this summer, on Father’s Day of all days. We joke that all dads just want some peace and quiet on Father’s Day, but this year he decided to really commit to that bit.

When remembering my dad, I think about double scoop cones from Baskin Robbins, weekends at Santa Anita race track, Polo by Ralph Lauren, sports radio, Hawaiian shirts, and family trips to San Francisco. He loved my dog, Chili Cheese, and would send me texts to relay to her. We bonded over our love of food, animals, being exasperated with my mom, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

My dad lived so much life before I showed up on the scene (he was 46 when I was born). He studied at Berkeley and USF. He watched nuclear bomb tests in the South Pacific while stationed in the Navy. He ran in MULTIPLE marathons. He loved sailing, skiing, and basketball. He lived in New York and drove by The Dakota a few hours before John Lennon was shot! He owned a car dealership in Santa Cruz with some friends. He loved to write but was very sensitive about criticism. He had 5 kids (by 3 different women…) of which I’m the youngest.

My dad was very lucky in death. He decided in late May that he was done with doctor visits and treatments and wanted to go into at-home hospice care. He had the most amazing end-of-life care team. All his children (and his granddaughter Chili Cheese Dog)got to visit him in his final weeks and say our goodbyes before he slipped away peacefully in his sleep at the ripe age of 86. by @courtenberry
