POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I have had this idea for a slow shutter speed drag into a sharp slomo shot for a couple years now. Finally gave it a shot. This was the first attempt, and I think the execution could have been done better, but I took notes for next time.

Motion blur is baked into the frame so the only effective way of doing this is with two cameras. I rigged 2 @sonyalpha A7ivs together and “zeroed” in the center of the frame to the same spot. Matched the position of @yung_mackinaw in post.

If I get the chance, I try to not make my action shots rely on reflexes. (Depending on the day, my reactions can be dog-water)
It’s about decisions made before anything happens. Anticipation beats reaction.
Is this the most insane camera technique? No
Could I make some changes to make it better? Yes.
My goal is to start sharing more of the thoughts that go through my head when filming. Oftentimes they can be applied to other areas in filming.

My favorite shot to come out of this week’s storm cycle.
@certified.beeef blowing through it.

In my opinion, shots like these only work when you have a frame of reference. A hand, a pole, a ski, helmet… but the best reference that makes a shot is eyes/goggles. Angus in the white room, skiing deep powder taken in Sugar Bowl Resort by @cousin.media

Drones don’t record sound for obvious reasons. (All you’d hear is (📣VVVVRRRRRMMMM🔊) so I put a small mic with internal recording on @thelastskijedi and matched the timing of the audio to the visual.

One caveat, it records during the entire session. One large .wav file. …so I found a little nugget after downloading the recordings.

I shot and edited this together last season and never got around to doing anything with it. So, here it is. taken in Sugar Bowl Resort by @cousin.media

This whole session was super cool to see. I’ve been working (on and off) at Sugar Bowl for 10 years now. This is by far the biggest “put us on the map” session I’ve seen. Last season, a few days after the resort closed @factionskis came up to @sugarbowlresort to film for their preseason edit that just dropped.

The park was built bigger than I’ve ever seen here. A ton of work was put in by @mike.schipani @bdon40 @borntoshovel and the rest of the @sugarbowlparks crew.

I should also be transparent: This post is BTS footage of me filming at this post-season shoot for @sugarbowlresort. I was not a part of making this film. All credit goes to @bluemaxmedia

…I did enjoy watching their process.

P.S. y’all should’ve asked @_elisabethporter for a private tour of the @atlantisreno taken in Sugar Bowl Resort by @cousin.media
