August Reads 📚

Surprising lack of fantasy this summer! I’d say I’d make up for it over the next few months but the ‘ber months will be horror focused 👻

Standout was Headlights. A Short Stay in Hell…I’ll be talking about that soon 🥹

🍂 Autumn stack 🍂

My favourite time of year. When the forests in Wales and the Peaks burn orange and brown. Ironic that it seems more alive to me now than it does in spring!

Thanks for the tag @vampsreads 🧡

🍂 September wrap up 🍂

Had a great run of 5 star reads this month! Can’t recommend Fawn and Blacktail enough, especially for spooky month!

Spark of the Everflame took me by surprise! I’ll be reviewing that one as soon as I can.

“Who gives you life? Pater Aeternus. Who gives you purpose? Pater Aeternus. Who gives you joy? Pater Aeternus”

I inhaled this book! It was a violent space opera with a 1984 aesthetic, deception, space racing and clone gorilla armies. What’s not to love!?

The Infinite State focuses on multiple characters who suffer at the hands of the strict rules of the Decurion Empire in their own ways. Until Katherine inherits an outrageous sum of money, and with it decides to create a democracy on a distant planet.

This is one of those rare books where I loved the narrative of every different character, and looked forward to reading about them again. I did feel like it slightly lost momentum in the second half, and things felt a bit rushed. But I think this is a fantastic debut to a new series, and I can’t wait to read the next one!

“She had only the vague sense that things weren’t as they were supposed to be”

I picked up Root Rot from @blackwalnutbooks in the @shirt_factory_gf after a recent trip to Upstate New York. I’m glad I left it to read for spooky season because spooky it was!

Root Rot tells the story of a group of cousins visiting their patriarchal homestead deep in the woods. Here, not everything is as it seems and the children embark on what could be described as a Lovecraftian psychedelic trip.

What I really enjoyed about this book was the fascinating collective “we” of the children. The narrator talks like the children are a hive mind of sorts. Using “we” even when one child is alone. It makes you feel like an observer as well as a child, watching them when they don’t even know you’re there. It’s reminiscent of the creepypasta “Anansi’s Goatman Story” where an entity infiltrates a friend group and makes them question what is real.

Though I’m not sure that I have a complete understanding of what happened in the story, I enjoyed the trip. As with other cosmic horror novels, not everything needs to be explained, the horror can just be experienced.

... lone now.
as with the sunset
so the coming of men.

Blacktail is the story of a half-wolf whose mate and puppies are methodically slaughtered by Man, which triggers a journey to awaken the Forest God to wreak havoc on mankind.

Truthfully, I thought about putting Blacktail down and never picking it up again. This book was magnificent, written beautifully, but my word it was violent and heartbreaking.

I am of the generation that was traumatised by Watership Down and The Animals of Farthing Wood. There’s a pain in granting animals the ability to process and articulate the suffering and abuse they endure the way a human would. It rightfully makes you grieve for the abuses the natural world has been (and is still) put through by our carelessness.

But there is beauty in this story. A celebration of the natural way of things. It expresses brilliantly how God granting Man dominion over animals was a perversion of the natural order. Beneath all the death and violence of this story, it reminded me that as gruesome as things can be, nothing is more deserving of being God than Nature.

🕰️📚 Strange, how a moment of existence can cut so deeply into our being that while ages pass unnoticed, a brief love can structure and define the very topology of our consciousness ever after 🕰️📚

I don’t think I’ve experienced existential dread like this before. I’m not sure I ever will again.

A Short Stay in Hell follows Soren after his death, into an afterlife spent in a vast library. To escape, he must find the one book that recounts his life exactly. It’s the “infinite monkeys with infinite typewriters” thought experiment in a way you’ve never imagined.

What makes this so horrifying is when the shelves hold books with every possible arrangement of characters, even stumbling on a single coherent sentence could take lifetimes. When faced with eternity, it starts to feel absurd. When you think of being alive for billions of billions of years, It starts to make your skin itch and your heart race. It turned my stomach how “unavoidable” the task was. That Soren had no choice but to spend eons finding his book before he could be free.

It’s funny that this is such a short book that packs such a monumental punch. I actually found myself wanting more. I’d happily have read a series of books about the cultures that could form in eternity, when time becomes pointless and death impossible.

A good read for spooky season!

I cannot review this book properly. I have family on here. But I will give it a go 🫠

This book was wild. I’m glad Aly and Josh found an outlet for their troubled lives (however intense that they be 😂). I appreciate the veiled attempt at trying to make the start of this book seem as consensual as possible, but hey, I guess pushing the limits come with the territory of dark romance.

I do think that it got a little silly towards the end. The serious tone shifted to couple banter very quickly which seemed at odds with the plot, but I’m glad they managed to have a lot of fun amidst a the chaos, and get a lot of exercise in the process 🫣
